Sleep was rare in the sense that looking for a wishing star rarely happens for the viewer. No matter how much I desperately tried to fall into a silent slumber, it was futile. Even though Sorrel was beside me trying to keep me warm along with our wolves. My leg was burning with a sensation that I only knew was an infection coming to a head. I dare not inspect the wounds on the back of my leg nor the area where the knife had imbedded itself into my thigh. I didn't need the grave diagnosis, no matter how many I gave in return over the years. Karma? I could feel the heat radiating through the layers of clothing and it offered up only a small amount of comfort to my freezing fingertips and palms. Every time I shifted, it hurt but I hid the grimace in my face afraid of alerting Sorrel to my plight. Before the light started to engulf the darkened sky, I wrapped my arm around her form and leaned my head against hers. I tried imagine what life would have been like if I hadn't been reaped. What would happen if I didn't die this horrible death coming for me -
Maybe I would have had a girl of my own? I forced the thought out and focused on the day beginning, even colder than before. It was not a short time later that Sorrel woke and we mounted our sleds, hooked up our wolves and we were moving along. Silence crept through my vocal chords, most a burning sensation through my throat of anxiety feeling unwell. I could feel my cheeks burning slightly, but again, it only added a small comfort yet a chill that had plagued me for a few days that I thought was the simple fact of the arena's frigid temperatures.
"Sor?" I whispered out but there was no way she could hear me until we had found our way back to the ghost trees we had originally gone to a few days ago. It looked odd to say the least. An eerily amount of silence crept over the entirety of the area even though it shouldn't. Fear and unease caught me as I pulled on Tux's leash and got him to stop before I listened to the deafening sound.
"I don't have a good feeling - maybe we should turn back, Sor? I don't like it here." I used my weight to press against the sled, eventually standing, limping a few steps and looking around. The way the area looked sent chills through my back that traveled through my body.
"Come on - let's go?" I take a step back to the sled, feeling the land below me shift. An odd sensation of falling and not hitting ground took but a few seconds, my voice screeching as I found my body weightless then a sudden impact taking my very breath away in a volatile way.
I gasp.
My back screamed as my mind went into doctor mode assessing the injuries I might have incurred from the fall by moving each one of my limbs only after I had gotten my breath back. "Christ's sake..." The realization hit all too suddenly as I looked around at the images of myself; my beaten, bruised and frostbitten self. "I look like hell... without the heat and flames."
It took every ounce of my strength I had to roll over, moving my legs to cooperate and stand.
The underside of the ghost trees was nothing but icy mirrors and no sooner did I glance at myself but I saw Sorrel's image as well. "SORREL! ARE YOU OKAY? Where are you? " My voice echoes through the cavern. I can see her but as I try to walk toward her, she seems further and further away. Frustration enters my mind and I began limping more heavily now. When I reach for her, I hit only ice. I spin around touching so many images of Sorrel unable to find the real her that I throw my hand at something and her image disappears and suddenly another face enters the scene. A very familiar face. I narrowed my eyes.
"What are you doing? What did you do with Sorrel? Give her back you Neanderthal!" I reach in my bag for the first thing I could get a hold of. I shake my head now as I searched for his friend's face in the mirrors. My heart stopped. "Hold on, Sor. I'm coming -"
