I walk through the wall slowly.
It's almost like
It's almost like if I rush in, or if I walk too fast, then I might pull myself out of whatever numbness this is.
And I think I'm scared of that.
But I know I shouldn't be. Because I'm Piper Shaye - Lorenzo Emberstatt's little sister, Anari Chesterfield's little sister, Luke Hailsham's little sister.
I'm supposed to be the girl wonder. A fearless little shit. The annoyance extraordinaire.
I look at Luke lying there and feel like I'm none of that.
I feel like a newborn. All shaky legs and wide eyes - a little girl looking for her brother after she's had a nightmare.
And
"Luke?"
I kneel down and touch his shoulder.
"Luke, you gotta wake up now."
Something drips onto his chest and I don't realize I'm crying again until I reach up and touch my face. My fingers come away wet, half tears and half blood and I stare at them before nudging him again.
"We have to go."
A sob racks it way through me, catches me so off guard that I gasp, and it's strong enough to make my ribs hurt and my stomach ache and I lean forward just enough to rest my forehead on his chest.
"Luke, please."
My hands find his and they're so cold that it burns.
"Please wake up."
The cave gets dimmer.
"I promise I won't make fun of you anymore, okay?"
Another piece of the wall shatters.
"I'll take first watch, you can sleep."
A breeze brushes through my hair.
"I'll make the fire tonight?"
Something skitters across the floor.
"Luke, this isn't funny anymore."
My foot falls asleep.
"Luke, please."
The roots above us groan.
"Please."
A cannon goes off in the distance.
"Don't leave me here."
