"We're almost there Andy!" She called out, the tundra's snow growing thicker around their feet as she pulled him along. Seven days, three meals, and one last friend.
She'd almost forgotten how much they'd been through so far.
Together, closer than ever and she feels it in her gut that they're almost there. That invisible line Delroy told her about -- before Yuki. Before the gore that Amelia left them in and the cotton's damp with sticky blood, Andy's stuck to her shoulders all the same. "We've been walking for hours, how are we not there yet?" He's been grumpy since the accident, and Caleb's been trying so hard to be delusional about it all.
Like he can't still kill her. They didn't sleep in the warm spots last night, Caleb slept with Little and Andy slept with his nightmares; one shift each, little rest and she can see it in his bags. She's tired and he's even more so -- there's a pit in her stomach that tastes like paranoia. The arena can't go forever, at least.
One day, it stops. The line is drawn and the last body stops, they've spent an entire week chasing this boundary and it moves with every step they take, it feels. "Shut up and enjoy the ride," she jokes and it doesn't land. He's breathing hard, presses his arm into her neck wound and it burns the same. He was the one to watch the anthem, waking her up enough to annoy her before she fell back to sleep.
Caleb didn't need the confirmation, they both knew what time it was.
Top eight settles in like it does every decade, and Jacynth is dead. Yuki is dead, Luke is dead. Amelia is the most dangerous person in this arena besides the brother on her shoulder, and they're both injured. "I can't see shit through this snow," squinting and wincing with each step, he pokes the nerve with dead weight.
"You sure we goin' the right way, Caleb?"
"Uhh, yeah," we have to be, "the snow falls south." I think, the trees sing hollow tunes as they go, chiming a haunted chorus.
"There weren't this many trees the last time we were here-"
"Okay? It's just-" she kicks the snow chunk on her shoe, "a new part. We're reaching the end!"
She's tried her hardest to keep them together -- Andy's the muscle and she's the brain. Her folder is nothing but cardboard and the names are slowing crossing out, blurring with blood and snow damp. Tears. "Come on Andy, just a little further," Delroy told her. There's a buzzing near the tundra, go to the tundra, escape through the tundra.
There's a train there, right past the edge. Andy and her will take their way out and make the lumber, burn charcoal and warm it up for Delroy. Luke's partner will find her way and so will Amelia. She thinks about Shy -- he deserves a third chance. Something better than this, and they're so close. Delroy was right, Andy, "Caleb," they're only a few hours out. She can hear the humming through the trees and her eyes are frosting over, "I need a break, smoke break y'know?"
"No, no we can't stop, Amelia's gonna catch up."
"Caleb."
"Andy!" She drags him another step, "we can't stop, you know we can't."
"We can, Amelia knows what's best for her."
"She's following us dude! And we can't take her again,"
"We'll be okay."
No, Amelia won't give up, not with the trail of blood. She's stronger, they both fuckin' know it. "We can take her, 1 on 2," the snow is cutting into her eye, she blinks the frost out as she can. "We're barely two, dude, have you seen yourself?" A light chuckle, "that's why we need a break, Caleb." They're both starved, dehydrated and bleeding, paranoid.
"We can't! Dude, suck it up, we're almost out of this joint."
"Caleb, c'mon,"
"We're almost out of here, we don't need to-"
"Caleb."
"Delroy told me himself, he knows where the exit is!"
"There's no fuckin' exit!"
"Shut up, Andy," she tries to laugh it off.
"NO, Caleb, you know there's no exit."
They yell at each other, above the humming of the trees and the pain of seven days, "Patricia fuckin' SAID-"
"NO, CALEB,"
She doesn't want to hear it, not from a boy who can't even walk himself to the finish line. "There isn't!" He digs his weight into the ground, she can't carry him any further and he doesn't want her to anyways, "the snow's getting worse and the gamemakers will kill us before Amelia can if we go out that far."
"You're lying! For no damn reason," she grips her knee with her left hand, right arm hoisting under Andy's armpit, "no I'm not! There's no exit, there hasn't been or else we'd fuckin' know by now."
Then what was the point of all this? Of listening to Delroy, pretend that there was ever a reason to believe? Caleb grits her teeth, "we need to rest or there won't be a day eight for either of us."
"FINE-" she grunts as she pushes Andy to the ground, letting him collapse on his bad leg, "fine, fuckin' lay here then! Get your rest and I'll go up ahead," she points her knife to the border. Heavy blizzard awaits and Little sits with Andy, deep in the snow as he sniffs at Andy's ankle. "There's a lot of ways to die right now and that's topping the list, c'mon," she balls her fists as he talks.
She's brought him this far, the trail in the snow lines further than she can see through the trees. "I'll come back for you dude! Settle in with Little, I'll be back from the edge before you know it."
"Caleb, don't do this."
"Get your rest, bro! You've got twenty minutes." Caleb tries to collect herself, they're too close to waste time. Her wolf settles on his legs and Andy can hardly keep his eyes open, Caleb's bags burn under the exhaustion.
"Oh, and don't get lost." She throws a peace sign over her shoulder before walking into the blizzard.
