her mother was killed before her very eyes when she was barely old enough to say the word "no." she couldn't even think to do anything more than cry and cry and cry in her brother's arms, burying her face in his neck. he smelled like sweat and sugar. like perfume and lavender. like her mother's soap. her father stood next to them, his jaw set. he spoke no words, but tears glittered in his eyes.

justice was justice, as the peacekeeper had said, the words washing over her two-year-old face like a caress from a blade. her mother had been caught stealing from a wealthy family in one - something she hadn't learned until she had turned ten. eight years without her mother and ash had sworn vengeance against the peacekeeper, against the man who had wrongly killed her mother, hung like a prize pig in the gallows.

because why would they need to steal when they had money of their own? why would her mother take from a family more wealthy than her own when she had want for nothing?

it didn't add up. and ashlinn had vowed to figure out the truth.

even if it killed her.
