now all the birds have fledthe hurt just leaves me scaredlosing everything I've ever knownit's all become too much
Jacinta Salazar never intended to fall in love with Mackenzie Pryce.
It didn't happen in a whirlwind. She has always been much too careful for that. As a child, her parents taught her to be protective of her heart, and she was. She became so lonely that she was certain it had frozen solid with ice.
Her love for him was quiet. It crept up on her like a shadow, rooting itself deep within her empty heart. By the time she was aware of it, she couldn't untangle and uproot it.
She wanted to. Jacinta had kept him at a distance, pushed him away when he tried to get close, so fearful of her feelings that she couldn't bear to face them sometimes.
Jacinta has still never told Mackenzie that she loves him. She wonders if he knows, if he can see it in the way her eyes light up when she looks at him, if he can feel it in her embrace.
It's because she loves him that she has to come clean. About everything. Jacinta has never told him about her father, her family, the real reason why they are so rich. She was afraid — and still is — that it's too much baggage, that he won't look at her the same after he knows the truth.
But their child is due next week, and she has put this off for too long. As they're sitting on the sofa by the warm golden glow of the fireplace, Jacinta decides to rip the band-aid off. It is a cold fall evening; outside, the leaves are just beginning to turn, the days turning more and more overcast as time passes by.
"Mackenzie," she says quietly, lifting her head from its resting spot on the crook of his shoulder. "There's something we need to talk about. I should have told you a long time ago, I just — didn't know how."
She maintains her closeness to him, their arms and shoulders touching, but she avoids his gaze.I can't save us, my Atlantiswe built this town on shaky groundI can't save us, my Atlantiswe built it up to pull it down
