District One Tournament Day Two: Rior vs Le Roux

Her weapon had sailed through the air and hit nothing but her pride - but then the referee blew his whistle and said match over. Sunny was half glad, half frustrated, that their fight had finished so quickly. She was just getting started before the medics rushed onto the mat - her crunch to the back of the girl's skull having done far more damage than she'd thought - but she'd take a free pass. Save her strength. A one-hit knock-out spoke volumes, loud enough for the District to understand who she was. She'd take a loss after this. Sunny had said her piece.

She batted away medics trying to stitch up the puncture wound in her cheek, slurring her words as they wrapped and bent around the injury. "Schhfine," she mumbled through tooth and blood. "I'm schfine."

Stitches could easily be ripped open. Showing a weakness only gave her next opponent an advantage. Let them watch her bleed, gaze at the horrifying mangle of flesh in her cheeks. Let them see her fight regardless. Let them know she wasn't going to let a wound stop her from being feral.

The girl in front of her looked no older than she. Small, slight, serious. Sunny was all of those things - a fairer fight, she thought to herself quietly. But Sunny was also feral, violent, unforgiving.

Stepping forward with the same unforgiving ferociousness as the last fight, she grinned - mangled cheek dripping fresh blood to the floor below.

She can handle a punch, broken teeth, but this-

This is a shock to the system.

An invasion, she gasps and the movement of her diaphragm makes the pain all the more unbearable. When the younger girl pulls her weapon out of her stomach it hurts even more. Sunny cries out, doubling over, falling to her hands and knees as her own weapon thuds to the ground.

Some fucked up father John Le Roux is, putting his youngest through this just to prove a point.

She's lion, but she's also a wolf - and Sunny howls as her hands find sticky blood collecting in her palms. There's no time to catch her breath but she finds a moment, panic coming with the winces as she fumbles for her weapon with bloodied fingers. It slips in her grip as she pants, feeling the tension from the murmuring crowd and the eyes of the referee eyeing her up, fingers pinching the whistle around his neck.

He raises it to his lips.

"Wait!" Sunny barks, gathering her strength to look up at the girl above her. The referee lowers his whistle on command and she grins, attempting to hide the twangs of pain in her shining eyes.

"You're good," she says to her opponent, laughing a little through a deep inhale. "I'll give you that."

And then she swings her right arm around and screams as the movement tugs at her shredded muscle - aiming for the other leg.

Sunny laughs as the girl speaks, then groans as she does what Sunny could not. The youngest Le Roux left standing falls to her knees again, succumbing to the deep wound in her thigh. Across the arena the crowd cheers for a winner and she craves the sound of victory - just not like this.

Winning isn't worth being wounded beyond repair.

And she thinks that perhaps this was her father's intention all along. To ruin her, to have her harmed to terribly she wouldn't ever be able to fight in the rings again. That concept makes her blood boil and she almost throws in the towel right then and there - but another part of her, the lion or the wolf she's not quite sure, wants to win just to spite him.

To say I did it, Dad. Lesson learned.

"No I'm not," Sunny parries back to the girl, swinging wildly with weakening arms and half an effort. It hits this time, a familiar crack at her hands vibrating through the ground, but she doesn't smile this time. In the crowd she's sure her father is scowling, so she says her words quiet enough for only her opponent to hear.

"I don't even want to be here."

Sadie says nothing, and Sunny assumes she's tired of the pity-party just like her father is. She keeps thinking back to what he said on the way home: "You're just like her."

But that's the thing - Sunny's never been like any of the Le Rouxs. Not her mother, not her cousins, not her aunt. A lion without a pack, without a king, without rules. Half lion, half wolf. She furrows her brow as she looks up and rolls away from her opponent's strike, but the pain gets the better of her and she's lost her nimbleness, wincing as the blade strikes her hip.

You're just like her.

Like who?

Nothing like Sadie, at least. Calm and quick and still on her feet. "Lesh get this over with" Sunny slurs, stumbling against the agony in her stomach and her leg and her face.

The world spins a little, she and her weapon with it.
