Dear Em—
They told me to beware of the girl with the supernova eyes. "She's mixed up in that Crocetti business" they always say, as if that means anything at all. There's hardly a person in Two who doesn't either hate the Crocettis or depend on them (or both). I didn't think much of it until Violet's cough got worse. Everyone knows that hardly anyone charges for care at prices like hers, but tangling with the Crocettis is a higher cost than anyone should be willing to pay. Then one morning Violet woke up and could barely breathe. I took her outside to the cold air, which seemed to help, but I couldn't put it off any longer. We were desperate.
At first glance there wasn't much to her. She was small and pale. I see why people mention her eyes, though — you wouldn't believe them even if you saw them. I've never seen eyes that dark of a blue. They really did look like a night sky. I suppose that's why she was named Luna. Between those eyes and her dark hair, the name suits her.
She was quiet, too. Not timid, exactly, but she kept her voice low and guarded. She asked a few questions about Violet. I asked her about the price. She looked Violet up and down and said a number that made me all but melt in relief. I'm certain anyone else would have charged us at least double, perhaps triple. Rumor has it that she takes people in for such a low price because that trouble at the edge of the district pays her well. I didn't ask about that trouble and she certainly didn't mention it, so I'll choose to pretend it's not true.
Do you think terrible people can do good things? Or good people can do terrible things?I'm not sure which she is.
When I told her Violet's name she smiled and said that someone had once called her Violet, too. Violet was either too young or too sick to truly understand what she meant, but I picked up on her meaning. I'd heard rumors, of course, that she was from somewhere other than Two. Nine or Ten or one of those districts. I hardly think it matters where she came from, but you know how people love to talk.
She doesn't deserve the rumors. Or at least, I don't think she does. People talk as if she's some wild, broken, angry thing, but she was very reasonable and polite. She never once raised her voice or snapped at me or said anything unkind. Perhaps the worst people are the ones with the best masks, but if that's true than hers is truly exceptional. I can hardly believe her capable of half the things people say she has done.
She wore a necklace that looked like a tiny golden sun. Violet asked about it and she said that it had been given to her by someone that she loves very much. She smiled when she said it, and I was glad for it.Is that wrong of me? I daresay even you have heard who it is that she loves. From everything I've heard about what has happened to her, she probably needs someone in her life who loves her.
I couldn't help by notice her hands as she tended to Violet. I flinched just to look at them. The scars were enormousand gruesome, curling out of her palms in huge, ugly spirals. I've seen other scars like them. She certainly isn't the only one who's been to the Detention Center, nor is the only one who did whatever it took to get the Capitol branding removed. She was missing a finger, too - Clayburn's signature, if I'm not mistaken. It's no wonder she looks at every person like a threat. And yet, her time in the Detention Center doesn't seem to have scared her. If anything, it seems to have sharpened her.
She carries a knife at her hip at all times. Even when treating Violet. I asked her to remove it and she refused. It makes me wonder.
I cannototherwise complain about her treatment of Violet. She listened to her breathing and gave me a tonic which has been working very well. It's strange, how such broken hands can heal so well. When she instructed me on how to administer it she spoke very clearly and with a level of confidence that assured me she knew exactly what she was talking about. She certainly knows a lot about medicine for someone only twenty two years old. I suppose she could have just as easily given me poison and I wouldn't know it, but as I said, Violet is improving. I'm more grateful for it with every passing day.
She gave Violet some lemon candies. Violet said lemon was her favorite and Luna admitted that they were her favorites, too.
They say she's plotting to tear down empires.
They say she's strange, like glass that refuses to shatter.
They say she's in love with an assassin.
Violet liked her very much, but I hope we do not have to return to her soon. We both send our love and hope you are well.
All my love,
Genevieve
