Growing up, you’d put faith into hard work. With enough of it, you could make something of yourself, and even be rewarded. But your mother and grandfather had disillusioned you of ever having an easy life. Not that it was without charm. You still loved the Saturday afternoons sitting in the sun of the living room listening to the radio with your mother. She still tired from the work week but steady stirring something over the stove while your grandfather was quick to spin another tale of what the district had been like in his youth.
Now you had a title, though.
Champion of the tournament, taking down not just those with family names, but toppling the fiercest of competitors. Enough that there were men rubbing their beards and whispering who is Missingno? As though you hadn’t been a glitch built to cause destruction; that what should’ve been a tournament where the obvious of them won, you’d somehow caused everything to go sideways and wind up at the top.
Yet in all the glamour of having your photo taken, a medal hung around your neck, and mister’s so-and-so wanting to get you into their gyms, you faded into the background just as quickly as you could. You’d been struck more by your first two competitors, those that had become footnotes, than any of this.
You found Isaac when you’d escaped to a space set aside outside of the grounds, a terrace that overlooked part of the city.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had anyone so interested in me as that,” You say to break the ice, hoping that he won’t just turn and head back inside without you.
