Of everyone in this family, I have the most respect for Alabaster Morrisen. I understand him in a way nobody else bothers to, see where his decision-making originates from. I get it, most of the time. But sitting me next to Annie at an opening gala? This makes no sense - even I'll admit that.

"Annie," I greet curtly with a nod as I sit, waiting for the food placed meticulously on fine china to be served at our table. This isn't going to be the easiest hour of my life, but it certainly won't be the worst. "I trust Angel isn't giving you too much trouble?"

I sound like my brother's Mom. Someone has to be, I think dryly, sipping at the white wine in my glass. I know it's not my parents fault that they drowned - well, perhaps a little - but I can't help but be bitter about it all. It's in my nature to be so.

Yet another party that Annie had to attend, but this time, it was hosted by her family. Most of the time, she wouldnt have gone, because at the end of the day, no one in her family really needed her support anymore. They were fine on their own, which made it easy for Annie to simply ignore the rest of them and then move on.

She was here though because she wanted to make sure that Trish and Axel both werent put through the wringer here. She knew what that was like, and the Morrisens had never been the best with on the spot questions. Even now, Annie wishes she could gut her father in front of everyone, but even she knew she wouldnt be spared from the clutches of the capitol if she did that.

So she would behave.

However, sitting at the same table as Addison was not what she predicted. She knew that she didnt have a choice in the matter, and they probably stuck people together depending on how unlikely they will fight. Annie and Addison had always been cordial, but nothing more. "Addison." she acknowledges, "Angel is fine. Im sure hes around here somewhere." I hated bringing Angel to these things even more, but if one Morrisen-Mer had to go, then all the Morrisen-Mer's had to go.

Annie simply took a long sip of water, trying to ignore the fact that she had information that could rock Addison's world. "I know Im not your parent, but moderation." Annie has to say it. There will be plenty of time to drink when I get the courage to tell you. She thought to herself as she switched to the glass of white wine placed on the table before herself.

Even she couldnt resist.

I wonder what Uncle Al is up to, twisting my thoughts around the question like the glass in my hand. He never does anything without reason. We're alike in that sense - everything has a purpose. Nudging the paper boat out to sea knowing it will sink, but taking bait down with it in order to catch the finest fish in Four. Planting seeds in people's minds to sprout an idea they'll claim as their own. Everything has a reason. Nothing is ever done just because.

So I wonder if this is a test of Annie, of myself, of both. I'm trying to understand his reasoning - we do not quarrel, but we do not kiss and hug goodbye. We are two ships in the bay, both trying to catch wind in our sails, mutually respective of each other's duties but bound to our own courses.

A smile pours into my cup as I sip, I know I'm not your parent. "I'll be careful," I reply. Unlike my dearly departed, aforementioned parents, I know when to pace myself. Perhaps if they were more aware of their surroundings they'd be joining me at this table.

In a way, I'm glad they're not. I wouldn't be here, Uncle Al's right-hand woman.

"How is it with a new member on your team?" I ask, making polite conversation as I refer to Beck Hailsham, Four's latest victor.

She looked around to see her father standing on the second floor looking out. He meets her gaze and then nods at her, and Annie wishes that butter knives werent so heavy in the front so she could throw a couple at him. She diverted her eyes and looked around for another moment to see that Angel and Anissa were talking, and Annie was quite impressed. Not a lot of people could keep a conversation with Anissa easily, but Angel had always been the smooth talker.

She just wished he had a little more confidence.

She knew that Addison and her could be civil. There wasnt bad blood, but they had different ideals. Annie was happy for her, because she was successful in taking over her mothers business. However, Annie did wonder how that was all going to shake out down the line. She knew it wasnt the right time to spill anything, becuase at the end of the day, it just wasnt fair. Not here. Not now. Not unless good ol Alabastor has something fucking stupid to say.

"Beck is still adjusting, but hes been good to have." Annie said with a small smile, poking at the dinner roll that she had put on her plate. "Scarred, but finding his own way of healing." Annie tried to keep the conversation going, it was the least she could do. "Did you know that he came from an orphanage that would harvest their organs at a certain point?" It was all the scandal.

Just like Annies family was.
