"You understand this, right?" I don't mean to be rude, I'm just genuinely curious. When you sit so close to someone in chemistry, it's natural to hope that they at least have some clue about what they're doing. You don't mess around with chemical reactions. Like seriously.

"I'm kind of getting the impression that you're not sure what you need to do next. And that's okay, I know this stuff doesn't come naturally to everyone." I place my experiment aside, already in the final stages with half an hour to spare.

"And I know asking the teacher for help is so embarrassing, not out of experience but out of principal — so I'm not against the idea of tutoring you, really. It's not that big of an inconvenience. It's only fair that we all be equally prepared for these lessons."

My smile and my generosity are a dangerous combination.

Infuriating, to be hurt by small things.

Maybe if I wasn't already having a bad day, I'd have snapped back without even thinking twice. Actually, I would probably made sure not to think twice about it and just throat punch her so hard that she wouldn't be able to talk for a month. I'd get suspended, but she'd have to go to the hospital and shut the fuck up, so that feels pretty worth it.

But. I feel very small.

It makes me want to vomit.

I look up at the ceiling and pause there, just contemplating. I know that I don't have the patience for her most days, and today is worse than most days, but the usual fuse that feels like it's always flickering on the edge of setting everything on fire feels damp and cold today.

"Are you a righty or a lefty?" I ask, tipping my head back towards her, voice hollow.

I'm gonna stab her in that hand with my pencil.

Let's see her help me with Chemisty from the discomfort of her hospital bed.

There's something so defeated in her tone that I think to myself, 'Oh, I feel really bad for her,' before I remember that I actually don't. Sorry about it. I just... don't have any pity to spare for disinterested students.

You don't care about earning the teacher's respect? That's fine, you just lost mine in the process. I glance down at my hands after she asks her odd question, smiling with pride and excitement. "Oh, I'm ambidextrous. My mother expected me to settle with being right-handed as a child, but I wouldn't allow it."

Just to be safe that she isn't checking for rings to steal, I move my palms to the far side of my desk, right in the professor's line of sight. "Anyway, topic change or not, I hope you take what I said to heart. It's good to be vulnerable about what you lack."

I reach for her experiment, cautiously, and offer a supportive smile. "At the very least, I can offer some pointers. We'll call this finding the middle ground."
