When my brother died I convinced myself that he'd just ran away, only for a bit

Even though I saw him choke and sputter on his last breaths just like every breath his lungs had forced him through before

and I saw the body and I saw a little bit of light collapse and fall from my Father's eyes

and the funeral saw me, saw us all stammer our way through hymns of heavy hearts, preached to no one to nothing but a pit too large and too dark and too restless to ever be content with only the corpse of a boy too young to have been taken

and I still told myself that he was just... gone, only for a moment

I was half right

Because he was seven when he died and I was six and I thought a year meant the whole world of a difference between us and that a year meant he was too strong to be taken just like that, all hollow and heavy and still in the winter moonlight

I would lie restless in my bed, tossing and turning until the darkness killed the light and the morning sun pressed sharpened claws into irises that had no tears left in them anymore, and I remember I would pull on shoes two sizes too small and wander the lost streets of the winter mornings, feeling the crunch of snow too pale and too innocent as I carved a path to the heart and to the slaughter

I think I thought my brother would be able to follow my footsteps when he came back

He never did, but I should have known that he never would

Because he'd been seven and I was six, and six was too old to believe things like that

Three days after my eighteenth birthday my sister is taken, too

She's nine and she's cold and lifeless, pale and innocent as that morning snow, no footsteps left to follow
