I can feel my body giving out on me.

I had known that I would be a target going in, career girl with the pretty nine under her belt, bad attitude to match, I knew. Living it had been another story, another kind of pain that I’m not sure people really are able to understand unless they’ve been in something similar. Unless they know what it is to have, on all sides, someone coming for your throat.

I have combat experience, and even that wasn’t something I could prepare for. I thought I understood, but I didn’t.

I do now.

“Can we just—“ I say, throat thick and chest heaving. There’s an ugly wound across my shirt, and I pull it over my head before thinking about it too much. It’s just us here now, and I don’t care if they all see me in my bra. I want to slump to the ground, rest my head against something and just take a damn breath. "We're safe enough here for now since everyone's run; let's stay for a bit."

I don’t want to think about how Panem is seeing me

I lean on Sutton without thinking about it much, search for her eyes and ask “can you help me find some more bandages? I don't think I can handle this on my own.”

It wasn't a dream, but it wasn't a night me either.

It was both, but neither all at once.

The pain was so intense it put me a slight daze. Multiple scratches and bruises covered my body, and there was a stitch in my side that just won't seem to go away. I inhaled deeply and a sharp pain plagued my chest. I winced and made a mental reminder not to breathe that deeply again. Reagan and Kyler were mainly unscathed, but Grim was looking worse for wear. She was entirely covered in blood, some hers and some others, but it was hard to tell who's was who's.

And that made me nervous.

"Can we just-" And before she finishes her sentence her shirt is over her head and on the ground. I know I shouldn't stare but I can't seem to tear my eyes away. It seems as if a lifetime has passed when she finally breaks the silence, and before I know it she's resting against me and staring into my eyes. Now I can't help but look away. “Can you help me find some more bandages? I don't think I can handle this on my own.”

"I think I grabbed some in the chaos, hold on," I say as I begin to dig through my bag in search of the right cloth. I look up with a smile and wave them around. I begin to unroll the bundle and glance at the other members of our alliance. "You two should see if there's anything else useful around here. I'm sure someone left something good," Then gently I begin to wrap the bandages arounds Grim's chest, careful not to put too much pressure, but also careful not to let them too loose.

"Let me know if I hurt you, okay?

"Uh, no. Let's not do that." Lore is pointing a finger gun right at Grim's head, and now I have to pretend like the thought of her dying isn't enough to make my stomach turn with dread. This stranger I only know on the surface — who has to die if I'm going to make it out of this arena alive — that I have no reason to care about. My thoughts are like a different kind of gunfire, ricocheting in my skull.

I rub my temples in frustration. Ignore it.

My gaze moves to my allies, and then to my melodramatic friend, and I have to push down the anxiety inside of me. Maybe one day I'll find a purpose for it, but now's not the time. "Please, just be careful." Lore sets out on a mission to kill the girl from One, and I battle with what to say next. Because I can't ask her to stay. She's not mine to protect — my real alliance is just a few steps away, wounded and winded and victorious.

This is where I need to be. Lore knows that.

"Don't go too far. I'll catch up with you." It's a whisper meant only for her ears, a coin toss in the air that I lose track of. Maybe luck is in my favor, maybe it isn't, but I can't help the way that loyalty fractures and branches off inside of me. I've got a forest sprawling out within me, but we'll just blame the butterflies. The way my gut rolls over, and my skin starts to crawl, trying to close the distance between myself and my allies.

Only for my knees to buckle beneath me — my body shaking as sharp pain licks up and down my spine. I fall to my knees with a gasp for breath, blinking away the discomfort that came and went so quickly. Okay, not butterflies. Of course that's too easy. It has to be fucking electricity. "Let's not all rush to help me up," I say with a quiet laugh, pulling myself to my feet and patting down my uniform. From what I can tell, it seems like the static charge only had eyes for me.

How flattering.

I catch up on the conversation I've missed, nodding when I need to. "Sounds good to me. You need to rest, Grim." My eyes glance up at the tower looming over us, the way it crackles with energy, and my ears pick up on the muffled voices of tributes all around us. "But let's not overstay our welcome. Bad vibes." As Sutton works on bandaging up our broken down career, I walk over to Reagan with a calm, easy smile.

"Well, you heard the lady. How's a supply run sound for our first date?"

Sparks are flying. Quite literally.

She was primarily shocked by the fact that no one seemed to have disappeared entirely. There were groups of people just... lounging about. Just out of eyesight, just out of reach. Probably setting up traps for them, or planning an ambush, and everyone seemed to be totally okay with it. Reagan decided that was fine. She just had to be the fastest of them when it came time to run, and after it was all said and done, she looked to be in the best shape of them.

Good.

Grim looked like hell warmed over, blonde hair painted red and matted to her face. She was leaking blood from several wounds. Reagan wished she had a cigarette to offer her; bitch looked rough. She thought it was a bad idea to split up at that particular moment. After all, that meant leaving Sutton to fend for the both of them and, well... Reagan respected her but thought that was expecting a bit much. But it was her instinct to think that way: to know there was power in numbers and want to stick with the herd. Common sense, et cetera. But the gnawing thought in the back of her head was incessantly reminding her that there was only one winner of this contest. If she wanted it to be her, it couldn't be any of them.

She smirked humorlessly. Kyler Petralia was hot, but he was the kind of hot she would never admit attraction to. She didn't want anyone to know she liked Kyler, that was weird! She and her friends would've bullied someone like him back in Three and trust, there were a lot of them. Try-hards who wanted too much to impress those around them. Hero complexes and the need to be the leader and yadda yadda. She'd tied a guy's shoelaces together in math class for a week straight because he'd volunteered to be an after-school tutor and had the gall to sit in front of her and not let her copy his answers on tests.

"I'm just the luckiest girl in the whole wide world," she charmed, locking her arm with his and busying herself by looking at the vibrating phone in her pocket. Message from Fitz.

She smirked, typing out a quick:

still only dead on the inside, dumdum. let's both stay that way, yeah?

She shoved the phone back into her pocket and looked up at Kyler, at the bleached white sun behind his big-ass head and his stupid, chiseled jaw and his broad shoulders. She fought off the urge to slap him.

"If there is anything edible in this bitch, I call dibs."

I pretend that I don't.

It's just a brief thing out of the corner of my eye, the chill I watch in her spine, the track of her eyes trying a little bit too hard not to look at me. It's the kind of thing that a spy has to notice, the kind of thing I got trained how to notice so long ago that I don't even notice when I do it anymore, read people like it's my job.

I guess because it is.

I wish my brain wasn't all foggy.

I don't remember very well deciding that Lore wasn't a real threat, that I wanted her to be able to run away and kill that girl from One whose name I refuse to make myself remember, but between one finger gun and the next second she's already slipping away to find her own allies and Kyler is on the ground. "Pot, kettle," I say in quick reply around a gritted jaw. I don't think he heard me though and part of me is glad 'cause it means he's about to go off and collect supplies for me. Something about that feels... right isn't the right word, but. It feels good. It makes me feel warm, that he would.

But then Reagan loops her arm through his and something turns over uncomfortably in my stomach so I look away.

I make myself look Sutton in the eye instead.

"Look at you—carrying your weight," I say, chest tight and made tighter as she starts to wrap bandages around my wounds. "I'm impressed. Mae. A small part of me thought you might turn out to just be arm candy."

I can feel blood all over, still sticky.

Here's hoping there's somewhere to go swimming in this hellscape.
