Anthem - Day Three

The air is getting heavier with every passing hour.

You feel it with every shaking breath - a punishment for the lack of canonfire you’ve heard the past 2 days. Muttation corpses are the only signs of death strewn around the arena, but you can’t shake the feeling that your own death lingers right around the corner.

That, and the fact that you’re all getting thirsty. Lips are cracking and the insides of your cheeks are drying out, thumping headaches and exhausted limbs from dehydration getting the best of you. You know you can’t keep on going like this - but there’s no sign of water, and no sign that your mentors care enough to sponsor you some. A million questions run through your mind, and when the anthem repeats itself in the night sky with a tale of 24 tributes still remaining you find your sleep uneasy - if you manage to get any rest at all.

But the answers to your questions come soon enough. At the crack of dawn, tributes wake to a cool breeze and bugle sound, the roar of plane engines tearing through the sky. The planes leave a streak of fuel, adding to the already polluted air to act as a guide for where tributes need to go. One in particular leads the fleet, dispersing 24 silver cylinders across the abandoned Overpass bridge before vanishing into the polluted clouds above.

You close your eyes - surely this is the end. But there is no explosion, no catatonic boom - just a bugle sound that calls each alliance to the same centre place.

The closer and closer you get to the bridge, you realise what the Gamemakers have gifted you. 24 flasks. Your dried tongue, your sore muscles, your parched mouth tells you immediately what’s inside: water.

But it won’t be that easy. Of course it won’t.
