He holsters his gun when Syren drops the other rat. It's quiet again, the smog taking all sound and muting it until all sound is just a dull thudding.
A hand tugs at the front of Sin's shirt towards the boy laying in the dirt only a handful of metres away. They slip over his shoulders, pushing gently. The whispers swirl around him, all reminders of what he owes to the child he's just killed, "Siiin," comes Eirlys voice behind his ear, "Lay him down beneath the earth, he'll be safe there."
He thinks about the bodies in Twelve, about how he's always been the only one who knows where all those people lie. At first, he buried the bodies to hide them, then it was to bury their whispers. He'd dig them down so deep that it was nearly impossible to hear them. Missing posters stacked on top of each other on telephone poles always stared right through him when he walked the District streets.
It doesn't seem fair that he has to carry the burden of the Mortuus secret alone. It doesn't seem fair that even here, in the confines of the arena, their ghosts came with him. Maybe it's not Twelve that's haunted but him.
Everyone moves at once, Sin walks towards Kane, Castor always in tow behind him. He knows that the other boy is bleeding, but Kane's predicament is a high priority. He has to find out what the other boy wants, needs that final wish before he can spend the night digging him a place of rest beneath the hard dirt of the overpass.
Eirlys walks with him, away from his alliance and towards the other kids. Shock holds the air still between all of them, leaving room for Sin to get through.
Kane's blood coats the ground around him in a two-metre radius and Sin leads Cas through it, the damp earth giving way a little beneath their feet. He kneels down and blood paints the knees of his yellow hazmat suit red. Eirlys is knelt across from him, a finger tracing the place on Kane's side where his kidney would be beneath the skin.
Then he reaches out for Kane, searching for payment for his crossing.
