She lurks beneath the waters of the lake. Her senses have adjusted to the toxicity - she is immune to its poison and its odor. She rests near the shore, waiting patiently for a food specimen to arrive. The fish here have an unpleasant, metallic taste, and it is about time she hunts a mammal. Their meat is juicy, tender, and blood running between her teeth is preferable to scales.

When she detects movement, she waits until the perfect moment, and launches herself - jaws first - at the nearest prey.

He scuttled across the land to reach this wretched lake. There is little water to be found here, and although his factory-processed bones do not require its nutrients to survive, he craves it regardless. This vast lake will become his land, his home. He will make allies with the other mutts residing here, and take his place among their colony.

Humans, however, are unwelcome. He is designed to hate them, to attack them on sight. His instincts kick in when he hears their loud footsteps, and he is too distracted now to focus. He flexes his pinchers and draws his tail back, ready to pounce, as an explosion rises from the water. He has company.

He sits quietly in the dark, Castor's head in his lap. Weak moonlight cuts through the smog in strange pockets, lighting up the world around them briefly before the smog shifts and sends them back into the black of the night.

The only other things lighting up the darkness are the little floating lights that came arduously towards them a few hours ago. They'd sat and watched the seelie's arrival, silent as the arena around them. Each of them seemed to already know where they belonged. Sin's chose him first, a rusty red colour to match the blood he'd spilled that day.

The anthem was ages ago, the first face up in the sky was Kane's. Sin gazed up at the boy that he had killed, already having learned his features. His expression didn't reveal much other than a guarded stare. Sin pressed his thumb into Castor's palm three times to mark the dead tributes. An uneasiness settled over him as he realized that there were still so many tributes left alive. He's pretty sure it's supposed to go quicker than that.

Sin finished his watch a couple hours ago and passed it on to one of the girls. He knows that his body is tired and that it'd be good to get some rest, but Sin's never worked like that. Three hours is all he can usually muster before waking.

And tonight, he has to wait.

Hours pass, the tips of his fingertips grow cold and he slips them under castor's head, searching for a little bit of warmth. His guard starts to lower, a sleepiness settles over him, but that's when he finally shows up.

The smog swirls in front of Sin, agitated suddenly. A low humming starts from the ground and Sin tenses, his fingers curling against Castor's shoulders. Ever since killing Kane earlier, the dreams have gotten worse. They've slipped into the daytime and blended with his waking hours. He's no longer certain where it ends and reality starts. Perhaps it doesn't, perhaps they're one and the same.

That impassive expression forms first, the lips, the nose, the eyes, the bullet hole and the shoulders all coming together at once. His arms form slower, the legs buckling at first before straightening out again. His hazmat suit is a dull yellow, hardly there at all and blood stains nearly all of it.

"Sin," comes the whisper.

His mouth moves after it, as if there's a disconnect between Kane's ghost and his audio. It crackles, like a bad radio and Sin tenses, knowing he's fucked up. It's not his fault, he wants to tell Kane, he tried to take him, to bury him, but Fitz stopped him. It's not his fault.

"Sin, you need to set my house on fire."

A streak of moonlight hits Kane and pushes right through him, splitting his ghost into two parts. Blood pumps slowly from his bullet wounds and Sin curls his hands into fists to keep them from shaking. Usually, final requests were a little simpler than that.

"Sin, promise me that you'll kill him," Kane whispers, "Kill my brother."

He doesn't speak again after that, no longer how long Sin waits. Kane just stares back at him, smog interrupting his form with every touch of wind.

So he shuts his eyes to sleep, no answer given.

He doesn't know if he can promise that.

In the morning, he wakes slow, Castor's hands drawing patterns into his back. Sin rolls to face him, searching him over carefully. Castor looks tired. He feels eyes on the back of his head but he doesn't turn to look. He already knows who is watching because the ghosts always do until their last wish is fulfilled. Kane will walk with him until the promise is made and kept.

He ignores him carefully, eyes running over the place in his vision where he stands. Sin learned long ago that no one else sees the things that he does.

The seelies didn't disappear in the night and Sin doesn't quite know what to do with them. It bobs after him wherever he goes in the morning, as if attached to him by an invisible cord. He's never had a pet, he doesn't know what it wants. Once, there was a crow that had followed for him for three days, probably enticed by the scent of blood.

Sin had shot it from the sky with a slingshot, since then birds had mostly avoided him too.

Syren and Lore make plans with Castor, Sin only half-listening. Castor's seelie is sunshine yellow and won't stop chirping. Sin's Seelie bobs around happily but has yet to make a single sound. It's fun to watch them dance and when Syren and Lore walk away, Sin looks to Castor, expectant.

Castor's the one with the plans.

Sin's stomach gurgles and he lets out a small huff of annoyance. He tried to save some of the plants he'd found yesterday but he'd lost them somehow in the night. Sin tugs Castor in the opposite direction of their little camp, intent on finding something to eat. The arena seems to be littered with canned foods and dying of radiation poisoning still seems better to Sin than starvation.

It isn't long before they start to smell a sweet sort of stench, almost too sweet, like rotten, cooking trash. Sin stops in his tracks, not wanting to go forward, but then he hears the first little ribbit.

A smile splits his face into a sunshine grin and for a quick moment, Sin Mortuus looks like a fifteen-year-old boy. He drags Castor into the bush with him and the seelies follow overhead, bumping softly into branches like helium balloons.

He's got one frog scooped up and pressed into Castor's free hand, just one when a sharpness digs into his chest and the air gets stuck in his lungs. His breath hitches, there's a moment of panic as his brain begs for oxygen and for a moment, Sin can't see anything at because of the bright light.

Then he wraps an arm around Castor, pulling him snug against his chest. He raises the other boy's arm for him and then turns his back against Castor's to shoot.

It's the first night that he doesn't really sleep. His body is heavy, and his feet feel like cinder blocks, but his mind is on fire and the harder he tries to ignore it, the more it burns.

He had rested against the bulk of abandoned car as the rest of them fiddled around, chin on his knees and arms around his legs. It had stung a little, to be shuffled around and treated like glass while Sin and Lore and Syren talked in hushed tones, but that's fair, he thinks. He's not exactly like them.

It's clear in the way he stumbles when they walk, like his feet aren't sure where they're going. It's clear in the way that he holds Sin's hand a little too tightly and how shaky his voice had been when he called out for the girls after that cannon went off.

He tries to be useful, and feels through his bag to find his roll of bandages. He unravels them carefully and pokes and prods at his leg to find out where it hurts, but then the roll gets lifted from his hands, and there are gentle fingers pulling away the leg of his hazmat suit and he only lets his breath hitch once at the action.

The night brings a strange sort of limbo, because he can't really tell if he's asleep or not in the darkness of the area. When he waves a hand in front of his face, he can't even make out the dull shadow of it. Consciousness could just be a dream, and a dream could be consciousness, but either way it feels like he's falling and the phantom sound of gunshots echos through his skull loud enough to make him cling to Sin's chest.

Sin had pulled him close and tapped his finger against Cas's palm three times that night, and that meant that three other tributes had died. There was a heavy feeling of dread that came after that, and the notes of anthem felt like a suffocating blanket that draped over him and pressed down on his shoulders. Because he knows that one of those taps was from their fight.

It's not that he was afraid of asking Sin about it - he was just afraid of getting an answer. Ignorance is just kinda nice like that. It lets him lie in the lap of a killer and pretend that he doesn't know any better. Maybe there's a selfish little part of him that's glad that, even if he did ask, Sin wouldn't tell him.

Wouldn't or couldn't. Same difference.

The thing that clues Cas into the dream is the fuzzy little light that dances in the corner of his vision. It moves when he moves, shaking like a flashlight beam, but just bright enough to break through the static of his blindness. It's gone in the morning, blended into the glow of the morning and he chalks it up to mental strain.

Lore and Syren are up first, and he listens to the lull of their voices, absentmindedly drawing shapes on the back of Sin's hand while he waits for the other boy to wake up. Lore tells them that her and Syren are going to look for food and Cas hums in acknowledgement, preoccupied with the way that he can hear the faint whistle of Sin's breathing when he really focuses.

The two of them move at a slower pace once the girls are gone, making their way across the landscape, and Cas is naive enough to think that it's a little nice. Sure, the air is heavy and disgusting, and Sin puts something slimy and very-much-still-alive into his hand that he grimaces at, but it's still better than the day they had before.

He's pretty sure he jinxes it.

Because it starts off slow, enough to brush off and dismiss, and then it all comes in full force and makes his head spin.

He frowns at the first drop, a casual sting against his forehead, and his first though is that it's some sort of bug bite. He scrubs his free hand against the spot to ease the sensation and keeps going.

And then it happens again.

It's in a different spot this time, landing against his cheek, and he tugs at Sin's hand, "Hold on." He says, and presses a finger to the spot. He recoils almost immediately when the burn spreads to his fingertip, wincing at the feeling and trying to figure out "What-"

He's interrupted by a sudden splashing sound, water? here?, and then there's a blackness over his eyes and something is ripping into him, shredding through his suit and the feeling makes him scream. There's a beeping to his left that he's pretty sure is just something in his brain panicking and he stands open-mouthed at the pain, trying to scramble for the revolver tucked in his belt because he doesn't want to let go of Sin again, it's practically suicide, it's stupid, he can't lose the other boy.

"How many-" He starts to gasp out, but then that splashing sound rises up again and that seems like his only chance - his best chance, so he braces himself against Sin and shoots in the direction of the noise.

The human breaks free before she can crush his bones or throw him to the floor. Her second head twitches, wanting to share the taste of blood. She spots the second human and lunges while he is occupied.

His chest burns with fire, it feels as if he's been nearly split in two, but Sin doesn't stop to look. There isn't time. He turns Castor and him with his shoulders, turning them carefully so he can follow the movements of the mutts.

They're still learning how they work, still trying to understand the best way to fight. Sometimes it feels like he's known Castor all his life, sometimes as if he only just met him today. So many things about him are so foreign to everything he always had understood about people and Sin yearns to ask him why.

He can't.

Even when he goes to speak, the words get caught in his throat as if the muscles there are out of use. He has to hope that Castor understands him anyway.

Sin grabs Castor's hand in his and presses his thumb hard against the side of his hand. 2. There are two monsters in front of them, two against two. Sin stares at both, gun pointed first at the alligator, and then at the scorpion. They both move too fast. His vision is blurry, pain, white-hot still and burning a hole in him, turning the edges of his vision white.

He turns into Castor, stumbling into him and catching him only just in time. A cold sweat breaks out on his forehead and Sin blinks, the pain making it hard to think. He looks down and sees a frog, destroyed underfoot. Green skin and pink guts everywhere, he almost throws up.

He's gotta protect Castor.

Sin raises his arm again and shoots.

Something scrapes against the back of his head, a little thread that stings, and Cas raises a hand to it instinctively, wincing when his fingers come away wet and warm. But Sin takes his bloodied hand and presses his own against it, uses the little language they made up before coming in here. Two, he says without saying anything, and Cas squeezes his hand in return.

It's okay.

His chest aches when he shifts his weight, but the easy emptiness in his lungs is reassuring enough that he just clenches his fist around the revolver.

"Just like before," Cas says, and he can still hear the way the gunshot had gone off when Sin drove his gun into the temple of that mutt, "Just shoot them like before."

Except Lore isn't here to give him commentary and Syren isn't here to reassure him - it's just the steady warmth of Sin against his back and the dangerous glint of mutts around them. The girls aren't here, and that means that Sin could leave him here, he really could. If the past days have told Cas anything it's that the other boy is more than capable of surviving this. It'd probably be the smart thing to leave him, or to feed him to the mutts and run, anything to get rid of the extra weight latched onto his hand.

There's something there though, a little pinprick at the nape of Cas's neck that makes his shoulders un-tense and makes his grip surer, and he doesn't quite know what it is other than the same feeling from hours ago, when the arena was quiet and his head was in Sin's lap.

Maybe it's a death wish, but sleeping in an easy betrayal like that would be nicer than sleeping alone in the ground.

"It'll be okay," he says quieter, the blood between their fingers slippery, "I trust you."

She bites nothing this time. The air is stained of acid and disappointment. The humans managed to avoid both of her gaping jaws. Her stomach growls in response, and she feels herself becoming impatient and aggravated. They are too fast! Why can't her prey stand still?

Explosions ring in her head, disorienting her. She does not feel any pain, they are not fighting back.

She pounces again.

"I trust you."

Sin can't explain why but he trusts Castor back. A part of him is afraid that he only does because Castor isn't a threat, but that's not quite it. He feels a little safer with Castor beside him, a little less exposed. He never had anyone like that back in Twelve, someone to fight beside or die trying. It hurts a little bit to only have this now, at the end of his life.

Cas's shot takes down the scorpion and Sin presses his finger into the side of Cas's hand again. One left. His stomach rolls, the back of his throat sharp with acid. He feels like he's been dosed and his mind works slow, clicking through all the poisons he knows. None of them ever hurt him the way this one does. Sin's brain fills slowly with the smog from the air.

They don't have time to draw this out, they have to win, fast, he can barely stand up straight.

Sin pulls Castor's arm up and aims them both at the gator. When he holds Castor steady, his hand slips a little, the other tribute's skin slick with blood. It's embarrassing to Sin, how badly he's messed things up. He's supposed to be protecting Castor, not getting him in danger.

Maybe he's just a bad friend.

The thought makes him pause, is Castor a friend? Can he call him that as if they're equals? Sin's concept of where he fits in society is broken, his caste always having been beneath everyone else.

Castor's hand shakes in his, there's an edge to his voice, fear, dislike for the gun in his hand.

Sin is a murderer, Castor is a good person.

They're not the same.

He steadies himself, take a deep breath and waits for the alligator to round back on them. Sin waits for it to start charging, stance firm.

"Just shoot them like before."

He shoots the gun again.

A blank white pain cracks across his forehead and the blood wells up there, dripping into his eyes and making them sting. He gasps and screws them shut, immediately regretting how the blurry haze of the sun disappears and everything darkens.

Cas blearily remembers this from school, some kind of pseudo health class, that head wounds tended to bleed excessively. So it's not so much the pain that shocks him, but the way that it suddenly feels like it's raining. The sensation makes him dizzy, like all his weight's gathered to one side of his body and it's trying to pull him over.

He catches himself on the recoil of the gun, hears the thump of something drop, and then Sin is nudging his arm back up. Cas crowds himself closer to the other boy, hands entwined, elbow to elbow, shoulder to shoulder. Cas knows what the little bones in that wrist feel like, and he knows the rabbit-foot tempo of that heartbeat, but he doesn't know the colour of his eyes.

It's a strange thought.

The blood makes his eyelashes stick together and he wants to wipe it away but he can't let go of Sin. One of the little rivulets makes its way down his cheek and sticks to his lip, slips its way into his mouth and he spits at the taste of rust and iron.

He desperately wishes that Lore and Syren would come back, because, really, why did they think splitting up would be a good idea? But they're back where they started, just the two of them, except instead of sitting under a kitchen sink they're bleeding out on a lakeshore.

Sin's hand moves against him again and Cas reads it like braille, "Good," he murmurs between them, nodding until it feels like his head is about to roll off, "We've got it."

And he doesn't know who he's trying to convince, so he just listens for Sin's shot over the waves before he pulls his own trigger.

Something hurts. Metal grinds against one of her massive jaws, and a hiss escapes her throat. The prey is fighting back, and their defense mechanism is effective. Unexpected. As she turns to face both of them with her heads, another object hits her in the torso. Even her tough hide isn't enough to protect her against this, and the humans aren't even touching her!

But she is determined to eat. She is hungry, and she will taste more.

The alligator's path is thrown a bit by their shots but it still lunges for the both of them, narrowly missing Sin's face. It was too close.

Castor tries to comfort him with words but despair begins to fill Sin, brimming quickly over his edges, destroying his resolve. He's a little bit desperate, knowing full well that if he dies here then Castor will just be torn apart next. Unless, of course, Sin can distract the gator long enough for Cas to get away.

Maybe that's the answer, he thinks. His hand shakes from the scorpion's poison, his sweat and blood mixing together to stick his hair to his forehead. He needs an antidote, quick, or he's not going to last long anyway. If it isn't the gator that gets him, it's going to be the scorpion's poison. If it isn't either of those things, it'll be another tribute and then even if he were to survive that, the arena would kill him in the end.

He can't win all of those fights, it isn't possible and if one of them is going to die here, Sin would rather it be him. The girls can help Castor, he'll be okay, but the idea of losing Castor seems so painful. Sin doesn't want to live in a world without him.

He pulls his hand out of Castor's and turns him back from where they came. He presses two fingers to the back of his neck and presses gently once, twice, three times. Then he places a hand on the centre of his back and pushes him, just once.

go. I've got this.

He's really not sure that he does though. It's too late, the gator rounding on him again already. He's got no choice now and Sin lets loose, the firing of the gun sending him slipping down into the mud this time.

Sin's hand slips from his so gently that it almost feels like an accident. And so Cas goes to reach for it again, goes to nudge a finger against a security blanket and make a pinkie promise but he passes through empty air. The strange little beeping sound from that morning is back again, louder though, like it's coming from inside of him and he waves his hand a little - Sin isn't the type to play jokes like that.

Then the pressure lands on his shoulder, and he's being turned and he can't help the little sigh of relief. The mutt's probably just behind them, that's all, and Sin is fixing his aim for him. That's all. Except the pressure lifts and there isn't another shot.

Blood in his teeth, hand on the back of his neck, the world spins and spins and trips up vertigo, it tastes like coal dust and kerosine and “Sin?”

There are poppy seeds in his lungs and there’s something crystalline shoved between his ribs, all fragile and tranquilizing and when he moves the glass cracks. It splinters and shatters a numbing agent against his bones and fuck, it’s freezing.

It's like being dumped into a tub of ice-water because he can’t feel the warmth of Sin’s hand anymore, he’s just standing there in front of a precipice, waiting at the edge of a ten foot drop off, and the sound of the waves puts him off kilter.

Sea legs? Isn’t that what they call it in Four? The whole ground shifts like a tide and his chest hurts with the great swooping momentum of it.

”No!” He digs his heels into the mud and scrambles for something out of reach, two feet of red thread between them and one foot toeing a line, ”No, I’m not leaving you.”

He whips around again when the gun goes off, overshooting the angle and sinking into an attachment he shouldn't have made.

"You wouldn't leave me, right?" And there's that selfish little part of him again - the greedy thing that soaks up the shelter of this boy. It's a plagiarized scripture, treat thy neighbour, and he tries to reach out for Sin again, tries to find some kind of reassurance, but he can't see him and it almost makes him scream.

"I'm not leaving you." He whispers instead, over and over, as many times as Sin needs to hear it. "I'm not"

She cannot fight her instincts. Hunger aside, the prey must die one way or another, even as the blood stains her pristine white hide.

He's gotten so used to having Castor's hand in his that without it, Sin's a little too off balance. He hits the ground hard, fingers tightening around the trigger of the gun as he does so, sending a bullet skimming off the edge of the gator. Castor calls out for him and for a moment, his shoulders tense, afraid that the other boy will misunderstand and think Sin was pushing him towards the mutt.

The mud is slick beneath him and Sin pushes himself up on one arm, just a little too weak to make it all the way up alone. He's used to it though, the realization that he's the only person he has looking out for him. Sin's always been a protector, the expendable one, it's all he knows.

"No, I'm not leaving you," Castor sounds stubborn as ever as he reaches out into dead air between them, searching for Sin's hand. "You wouldn't leave me, right?"

Never, he wants to say, but he can't so he shakes his head instead even though Castor won't see it.

Even if the sun never parts the smog again and they're doomed to the perpetual half-dark of the arena, Sin won't ever leave Castor. If Castor leaves first, they'll have to pry his body out of his hands.

He doesn't plan to die here, to the gator. For a moment there, it was the only viable option to him but laying there, seeing Castor reaching for him does something to him. Maybe it's a surge of adrenaline or whatever, but Sin crawls to his feet, both hands planted in the mud to steady himself.

He can work around the white at the corner of his vision, press through the pain gnawing at his chest, live through all of it for just one more night spent laying beside Castor.

"I'm not leaving you, I'm not," Castor whispers, hand still stretching towards Sin. "I'm not leaving you, I'm not," he says it again. Then again and again and again until Sin's cheeks heat up and his eyes swim from fatigue and horrible shyness.

I'm not leaving you, I'm not. I'm not leaving you, I'm not. I'm not leaving I'm not leaving I'm not leaving I'm not leaving you.

Castor's shot hits harder than Sin's last and the Gator stops long enough for Sin to take Castor's hand again, grip as strong as he can muster. He holds on tight, wanting to reassure Castor back, but it's hard. The world spins and all Sin wants to do is let it take him down with it.

He presses his face into Castor's shoulder instead, lets his tears roll of the yellow of Castor's hazmat suit and groans softly. The shudder of sound leaves his lips, a half-concept of a vowel, and Sin's breath hitches softly.

His gunless hand wraps around Castor and he curls his fingers into the hair at the nape of Castor's neck, holding on tightly. One inhale, one slow steady breath and the sense of doom is gone leaving a sense of calm.

They'll survive this.

Sin raises Castor's arm with his. They need to get back, together. He aims carefully at the Gator's skull, right where he expects the weakest point to be, and he shoots.

The shot ricochets off of the gator's back instead and Sin grits his teeth, arm shaking from the kickback and the effort. He adjusts Castor's aim quickly and gives him a quick tap on the arm, shoot.

He finds his anchor again and that makes the tides settle down, but it ends up just being one less distraction from the pain. Because his chest is ripped open, and his temples are pounding, and he grits his teeth when Sin's hand brushes against the cut on his neck.

But he still wraps an arm against the other boy's shoulders and presses his chin to the side of his head. Castor can hear the snap of the mutt's teeth nearby, flinchingly close, but there's something that keeps him rooted to the ground long enough to feel the rise and fall of Sin's back. It's the protected becoming the protector, fifteen years of catching up culminating into a single second of quiet.

Cas tries to match the grip Sin has on his hand, and maybe it's just that he's so used to the risk of expendability that he's never tried to make his strength bruising before.

Careful, the voice that sounds like his mother says, You'll hurt yourself. But this time the pain is less medical and more enticing. It's the difference between being sheltered under an awning and then stepping out into the rain. He squeezes Sin's hand so hard that his bones creak and it makes him feel more alive than the medication ever has.

It makes stars dance across the fogginess of his vision, static exploding like dulled out fireworks, and Cas lets his arm be guided. He trusts Sin. Not just because the other boy has served as his eyes for the past four days, not because he listens to Cas's ramblings without complaint, not even because his fingertips dance across his skin so gently.

Holding his arm out straight feels like a herculean task, but Sin's right there beside him, holding him steady, and when Cas pulls the trigger it feels less like his own finger moving, and more like the two of them moving together. There's a phantom feeling of a hand wrapped around his right hand, mimicking the left, and his arm shakes with the effort but it fills him with ten feet of courage.

Cas supports Sin's weight just as much as the other boy supports his. They lean on each other, and even though Cas can't see where he shoots, he shuts his eyes anyways, trusting Sin's aim.
