There's a breathlessness to it, she realized. A heaviness, and a lightness. She could inhale and expand but it seemed to go nowhere; she couldn't exhale and she wanted nothing more than to disappear entirely so she feared taking in any more air.
She opened her mouth to do something: scream, or cry, or curse, or beg, or sob. Nothing came out- deafening silence. She fell to her knees, slammed fists into the dirt and into the ashes and into a pile of tires stacked at least three feet higher than her. She hated. She resented because she loved. And now she knew for sure the things she'd only guessed at before.
She would never get better.
This place was the end, regardless of if her heart kept beating when she got the chance to leave.
