Appearance:

Kyle is small and not particularly muscular. It makes him look even younger than he is. He's not strong in the slightest but he is agile and good at hiding (since he's so small and slim he can fit into small spaces). He has short black hair that's generally a little messy - it is thin and gets windswept easily and he twirls his fingers in it when he is nervous. He has colorful hazel eyes that carry a warmth and kindness to them.

It's not uncommon for Kyle to have bruises from being slapped or punched. He has scars on his back from being whipped - he was young and had said something stupid about the games. He has long nimble fingers that fidget when he's nervous. For practical purposes, Kyle generally wears rundown jeans, dirty boots, and a t-shirt.

Personality:

Kyle is a sweetheart. He always wants to help everyone and he can't stand to see people in pain. He tends to be trusting until he's given a reason not to be. But even if he doesn't trust someone he still cares about them and will do anything he can to make their life better. He would never dream of hurting another person and his fight or flight response is heavily geared towards flight. Kyle loves animals and hates to see them hurting almost as much as humans. He eats meat only because he has to in order to survive in a world where he's not given the resources to be a vegetarian, but he can't stand to see the meat being prepared and still looks like an animal.

Though perhaps a little naive, Kyle also has decent instincts. Though instinctively trusting, he's pretty good at reading facial expressions and at knowing when someone is lying. He's definitely good at knowing when someone might be about to try to hurt him. Kyle is smart and he likes reading. It's hard to get his hands on books but he will read literally anything. He likes making up other, better worlds, and will tell his younger sister stories he makes up.

Kyle is pretty quiet, especially when nervous. But when he does speak he is generally pretty honest and forthright. Though he's learned to keep some things to himself. For example, anything anti-capitol or even wishes that things could be different. His expression is generally an open-book and even when there's something he knows he can't say, it's obvious that he's holding his tongue.

History:

Kyle's father, Cody, works in the stockyard and his mother, Wren, works in one of the meat factories. Kyle has two older brothers, Leo and Oscar, and a younger sister named Ariel. Kyle has always had a tenuous relationship with the men in his family. His father worries over how soft he is, but it comes out in the worst possible way - he has a tendency to hit Kyle to get him to toughen up, though by now it is clearly a lost cause. Kyle's older brothers are embarrassed by him, thinking him 'girly'. They rarely have a kind word for him and are often pulling pranks on him, thinking it funny that he's so squeamish.

But Kyle gets along well with his mother and sister. His mother hates how her husband treats her youngest son but she knows - or at least thinks - that it is out of love. So she hasn't left him, though she will try to stop him when she sees him trying to hit Kyle. She dotes on him, especially when he's upset. Ariel adores Kyle as well - Oscar and Leo will never play with her, but Kyle will always make time for her. Ariel is five years younger than Kyle, and she loves the stories he tells, sometimes acting them out with little dolls made out of straw.

Kyle's family is not well off, like most of the district, and all the kids get jobs as soon as they can. His eldest brother is an adult now but he's still living with them because he doesn't have the money for his own place. Kyle couldn't stomach getting a job killing animals or dealing with their carcasses. But he managed to get a job milking the cows and goats. All the children have had to take out tesserae to help the family get by, something that weighs heavily on Kyle's mind - he knows he would not do well in the games. He can't imagine killing anyone and thinks his best hope would be to simply outlast everyone, but he knows the gamemakers don't let people win without hurting anyone.

Kyle has always struggled with how cruel their world is. He can't even stand to see animals die, let alone humans getting hurt. During the games he tends to cover his eyes or at least close them whenever he can get away with it - though he knows he'll pay the price if his dad catches him. He avoids the district's gallows and whipping post, even when no-one is there - he'll walk for ages to get around that part of the district.
