Anthem - Day Six

The thick smoke disperses as the bodies are picked up by the hovercrafts, leaving you gasping for breath in a whirlwind of ash, dust and bloody puddles where tributes bled out. Light from their Seelie friends have dimmed too, disintegrating into the air with each cannon fire.

It’s a chilling thing to witness, a Seelie’s light going out as your friends and foe fall. The sight makes the realities of death - perhaps at your own hands - that much more haunting. Glancing at your own floating companion as the anthem plays, you can’t help but wonder when the light from it - and your own eyes - will fade away.

But it’s not that simple. The sickness is getting to you now. Your hazmat suits are all but shreds of fabric, gas masks war-torn and cracked beyond repair from your endless days of battle. There’s not a lot left to protect you from the waves of nausea, the raspy coughs, the fatigue that plagues your muscles. Others wake to pulsing migraines or a blurry disorientating world, squirming at the brittle clumps of hair left on makeshift pillows as you rise at the familiar call of a bugle sound thundering through the arena.

Another hazy morning, another eerie cry of war. But the rats don’t find you today - instead, the freshly filled cans of water find you. If you’d missed the anthem last night you only need to find high ground and count the number of white parachutes littering the air: twelve parachutes. Eleven must die.

If another tribute doesn’t kill you, perhaps this arena will.
