In truth, he's been going mad.
Locked inside the confines of the Lockwood estate has been hell. With Leon practically following him around, ready to pounce at any sudden movements Markus may make, he's been shut away. Cut off from the outside world. And even when he had managed to shake his brother in all but blood, when he was able to lose him and seek out the girl from across the bridge, he'd found her snuggled up in the arms of someone he didn't recognize.
It had been a blow to his ego, to say the least. It had broken his heart into a million pieces, if he was being brutally honest. But it had also taken his uncertain mind and made it certain. He cared for Lena Martin, despite the fact that she was literally the enemy. Regardless of the fact that he should, by all accounts, hate her and plot for her demise. But the thought of such things churns his stomach the same way seeing her in the arms of another man had. And that told him he had to do something.
Before it was too late.
He'd assigned their best soldier to track her movements for the next few weeks. Specifically, he told Kitty to send word to him whenever she was spotted on neutral ground. Whenever she was nowhere near Crimson territory, so he could seek her out. So he could plead his case. So he could prove to her that he was nothing like what his father wishes he was. Nothing but a fist to smash atop Nine. Nothing but a savage dictator in a nice, expensive suit. Cutthroat and merciless. But the problem was that Markus Lockwood was dripping in mercy. Soaked in kindness. Wrapped up in empathy.
And so was Lena.
It was why he could see himself falling in love with her.
It was why he already was falling in love with her.
About fifteen minutes after his afternoon workout with Leon, he received a message. Delivered by one of Kitty's own, a sheet of paper with a place and time. A coffee shop. She goes there every Wednesday afternoon on her way home. 4pm. Don't be late (: He glances at his watch, sweat still dripping down his forehead from the run he and Leon had done to finish up. "I gotta run," he turns back and tosses the water bottle in his hand back at Leon who caught it with an inquisitive quirk of his brow. "Forgot about a meeting across town today, sorry!" It's not entirely a lie. He's had these plans for days, but he knows exactly what Leon would say if he knew who he was meeting. He'd try to stop him, try to convince him it wasn't a good idea, and Markus was worried it would work. Which was why he simply kept his mouth shut, ran back inside, and immediately got ready.
Twenty minutes and a shower later, Markus headed out towards the center of Nine. B-lining it right for the shop Kitty had mentioned, but he wanted to make a stop first. He just hoped it wouldn't eat up too much time. Though, even if he was a bit late, he knew it would be worth it. Calla Lilies were Lena's favorite flower. He knows this because he remembers asking her the night they first met.
He steps away from the corner shop ten minutes later with a bouquet of purple, white, and pink flowers in his hand, a smile on his face, and a pep in his step. He made his way down the street, chest puffed out and head held high. Markus was making the right decision, wasn't he? It didn't matter if it was going to burn the entire district to the ground. As long as he had Lena by his side. It would all be worth it. Every grisly, grimy bit.
He spots her from across the street, glancing in either direction before she crosses. She's got a coffee cup in her hand and a canvas bag over her shoulder. God, she's gorgeous, he thinks to himself. She's more than you deserve.
"Lena!" Markus calls out to her, dashing forward towards the crosswalk where she is thinking if his mother was here and could see him now, she would be proud. He's choosing love, after all. "Lena!" He calls out again, waving his free hand in the air to draw her attention.
