Belle gets emotional over the anthem, and so does Coach. He’s not sure if it’s because she got emotional first, or if it’s because Bene’s dead, but nonetheless, he catches himself crying when Belle hugs him. Despite agreeing with Belle the night before that if they encountered Bene and Syd again they’d be enemies, Coach was reluctant. The thing is, he was scared of Belle, to an extent, so he felt as if he had to side with her.
——-
The next morning, Coach saw him before Belle even said anything. Syd.
”Coach,” Belle says, "Unless I'm just fatigued, I think you have a choice to make."
She was right. He did have a choice to make. Would he carry through with what he’d told her the night before? That Syd was an enemy now? Or would he fight by Syd’s side instead?
He didn’t have long to think, though, before a bird mutt got between he, Belle and Syd. He quickly tried to strike it with his spear, but to no avail. It came down at him, and it struck, hitting him right in the side of the head- it stabbed him in the ear, and he collapsed.
Then, he heard Belle yelling, but it sounded faint- far away, even though she was right there. He tried to pull himself up, but he couldn’t do it all the way. He collapsed again, and he heard a beep. His phone- it was recording. He didn’t know who he’d dialed, but he’d certainly dialed someone.
The sounds of his death would be broadcast to their ears.
He groaned. He cried. He overall just broke down as the life started to pull away from him.
”B- Belle- I- it hurts.” he sobbed.
All of Panem was watching him die to one strike from a bird. How pathetic. He’d failed, especially given how swiftly and impressively he’d taken down Fridae the day before.
Most importantly, his sister was watching him die, broadcast for her eyes to see.
”I- I’m not ready to die yet,” he said. ”Help me, Belle.”
In the end, the darkness came over him, though. Nothing ever stopped the darkness.
Not even the light of the little seelie that’d followed him the past few days could shine forever. Its light was dimming as Coach’s life started to fade. The little fire salamander he’d acquired now curled up next to him, nuzzling him and singing Coach’s flesh the slightest bit as it did so.
Coach whimpered a bit as he lay there.
Beep. The time for the voicemail ended.
His eyes were flooded with tears.
His father probably thought he was pathetic.
His mother was probably trying not to cry.
His sister was probably sobbing.
Poor Sephora. She didn’t deserve to see this. She didn’t deserve to watch her brother suffer and die. Unfortunately, his time was almost up.
He was fading.
He was crying.
He was hurting.
He was dying.
His spear fell from his hands as he lay on the ground. Coach was at his end, and he’d completely failed.
How pathetic.

District One
”Raise a glass to the end of it all
Who's to blame when it's everyone's fault?
And we celebrate our way through dangerous times”

And we celebrate our way through dangerous times”
