Mama always raised me not to make the same mistakes she did, and I loved her for it. She always did her very best to provide for our lil' family of two, even if her best wasn't much. I was always very glad to have such a close relationship with my mum, most of my friends mums are dead or deadbeat. She's always been my best friend. I always say your moms like your built-in best friend, but my classmates never understand. I 'pose it must have something to do with all the dead moms in the district.

My mum was pregnant with me when she was sixteen, younger than I am now. She always told me "never look at a man you don't love with lust, because he will almost always leave when the deed is done". Whatever that meant. I suppose she looks at a lot of men in that way, because none of 'em have stuck around that long. That's one thing my mum and I don't have in common. I've only ever daydreamed of a picturesque romance, where one day some noble but humble gentlemen will sweep me off my feet and take care of me for the rest of my days. I haven't even had my first kiss yet, a secret I've always carries whenever my girls talk about their newest "endeavours" with boys. I've always been self-conscious about my lack of promiscuity, but my mother's words always echo in the back of my mind and I always try to suppress those feelings, just for her.

My father wasn't around much. I saw him maybe once a month when I was younger, if that. He was a deadbeat drunk, as my mom always put it. Never cared much for myself or my mother. My daddy issues didn't bother me too much, as long as I always had my mother I was content without a father figure around. Weekends with him were dreadful - it always seemed to be on a dreary, dark day, although my memory is hazy from my youth. The only exciting part was seeing my older brother - Affron Williams.

I always looked up to Affron as a little kid. Having a big brother was awesome - it was like having a built-in wrestling partner who every once in a while would let you win and beat up on him, although your little tiny fists couldn't even break skin on his tough exterior. Although my memory remains like an unfinished puzzle with pieces scattered all over the floor, I remember him being the closest thing I had to a male figure. We only had the same father - our resemblance to each other matched it. He was chiseled, strong and had skin as tough as his upbringing. I was soft and delicate, skin as tough as porcelain just waiting to crack.

When he volunteered for the Games, I was too young to understand. I remember my big brother hopping up on stage, looking more scared than I had ever seen before. It's almost like his skin was made of porcelain too, and it was teetering on the edge of the coffee table almost ready to shatter into a million pieces. My mum forbade me from watching the games, said it was a grown-ups program and I didn't need to see my brother partake. She didn't even allow me to see him off at the Justice building, claiming he would put nothing but nonsense into my head. Mum was never a big fan of Affron - it almost seemed like she was happy he had volunteered for the games. I never saw him again.

Grief is a funny thing. Sometimes it doesn't hit you until you're much, much older and the naivety of years passed have disappeared. I was too young to understand his subsequent death as a victim to the 75th quarter quell, much less the sacrifice he made to his fellow district partner, Sage Scarborough. As I grew older, I was able to watch the recap of his games. He was almost instantly killed in the Bloodbath, not even able to meet up with the man he promised to protect in the games.

Although I was very young when it happened, being the sister of a former tribute always seemed to make me the centre of attention every time Hunger Games season rolled around, a routine that I grew very fond of. Whenever I talk about his noble sacrifice to my friends, they never seem to agree with me about how romantic it was. He had fallen in love with his best friend and realized too late when they both were already at death's door. He made a promise to protect and die for Sage. It was truly like Romeo and Juliet, where the Games were the Montagues and death was the Capulets. His story made me realize all along that the knight in shining armour must be out there somewhere, a knight that would sweep me off my feet who would be willing to die for me. But he wouldn't need to, because we'd have more time than Affron and Sage did.

I haven't seen my dad since Affron died. My mum let me go visit him shortly after his death. He didn't seem to be phased by it, remaining the same man I visited when I was younger. I later learned my father didn't even bother visiting Affron in the Justice building before he was sent off to his death. I never visited since.

My mother always tells me I shouldn't look up to Affron and his story, as it was bridled with young stupidity of a teenager who didn't have much hope for his future rather than an undying romantic connection that just couldn't be torn apart, even by The Hunger Games. I never believed her. Affron always had a good head on his shoulders, I just knew it. She told me that until I grew up, my naive views will always shadow my judgement. I still daydream of the day I get to find a romance like theirs. Until then, I'm just the sister of the first dead tribute of the 7th Quarter Quell.
