I don't understand this District. If you want to be a tribute or a victor, you're glorified. If you want to be a Peacekeeper, you're celebrated. But if you simply want to be a part of the Capitol's larger-than-life, other-worldy society, you're spat on and ostracized.

I could have been just another girl with a scowl and bloody knuckles fighting my classmates in the dirt. And I can be that, if needed. I can be anything you want me to be. I'm a chameleon girl, a performer, working late nights after school at the cabaret doing makeup for the stars. I turned up to my job first night ready to wash glasses and they asked who painted my face. Two hours later I was backstage earning an extra three bucks an hour. Any sixteen year old that could do a cat-eye better than someone twice my age deserved to earn her keep, and earned I did. They paid me in coin and in lessons, watching backstage at how they transformed from happy-go-lucky girls to performers.

At school I learned how to avoid trouble and stay away from the kids that called me a freak, who chastised me for wanting to be anything but good old fashioned District Two. Being good old fashioned District Two never got anyone anywhere - nobody's seen Shy Aubergine since he got off the train and nobody remembers who Julian Bryze is. But they remember who Cricket Antoinette is, and they hate her for it.

Better to be loathed and on everybody's mind than loved and lost.

Better they curse my name than it be forgotten altogether.
