There is something distinct about living under constant threat of an entity like The Capitol, something District Thirteen knows all too well with the fear of recapture laced into its very founding.
It was no wonder then, that as the Dark Days subsided and a new sun rose over the rest of Panem, that District Thirteen retreated its forces and allocated resources towards their housing and containment, fearing that their newfound peace would only last for so long. However, as the years of time came and went and the established boundaries between Thirteen and its enemies were continuously respected, these housing facilities gradually morphed to the changing landscape of Thirteen’s society and hierarchy, shifting from simple facilities into a myriad of small-scale “Academies” targeting the youth of Thirteen and promising to raise generations of youth that could help protect the place they love, should the need arise.
With the passage of time came the gradual thinning of these facilities, with many merging into one larger entity or simply being overtaken by those of higher status, prestige, and wealth backing. Now, there exists only two of the largest and most respected Academies for military training: Kostas and Ames. Occupying a large area of the living sector of Thirteen’s underground facility, these Academies have years of history of raising prestigious soldiers for Thirteen, with many notable alumni going on to make important contributions to Thirteen’s safety and weaponry development.
And, of course, plenty of history of rivalry between themselves.
Whether it is close proximity, the close-knit mentality of recruits as they go through the four year academies, or the annual festivities long-since held between the two schools, the years have given way to a highly intense and (mostly) friendly rivalry between the Academies. And, with the new push for the youth of Thirteen to help serve their homeland, the doors have opened to more and more recruits to flock to the schools in hopes of turning themselves into the highly regarded soldiers they grew up learning about.
Because after all, competition is the best form of motivation.

The statue of Dmitri Kostas greets every spectator that casts their gaze on it, a tribute to the first ever taken by the Hunger Games. Dmitri Kostas stands tall, shoulders squared, chin raised and face staring bravely into that which District Thirteen has never known. Still, true to its source cuts and wounds litter the metal statue, scattered across its arms and legs. Though, what pours from the cuts is not blood but instead shimmering bronze water. The streams wrap and curl around the body of the first boy lost, cloaking its form and turning the tributes' wounds into the very armor that shields from enemies.
The water eventually falls into a moat that surrounds the statue, wrapping around the figure in a protective barrier. A million shimmering coins sit at the bottom of the water, remnants of citizens of Thirteen in memory. It’s said that tossing a coin into the water will bring protection for your loved ones, but just as many leave a coin in the current to remember that which has been lost.

A M E S A C A D E M Y
Those who attend Ames Academy are greeted daily by the looming figure of Adder Ames, the first ever Victor of Panem’s Hunger Games. Her eyes stare straight ahead, up into the metallic ceilings of Thirteen but it is as if she is staring at so much more, bravery written even on the face of a girl District Thirteen was never given the privilege of knowing. And while it is true that wounds litter the form of the metal, true to the source of their inspiration, the blood that would normally pour from such deep cuts are hidden by the shining red metal of the statue itself, the color of anger and fury and everything that it took for the girl to remain standing in the end. In her right hand is the very crown that the Capitol forced onto her head in the wake of her victory, though it is nothing regal and nothing to be respected. Instead, the silver metal seems to bend and wilt in her grasp, silver jewels and diamonds fallen to the ground below.
The shadow of the statue is written in the same red color of its form, bleeding into the very ground that the recruits walk on and creating a carmine red walkway leading to the doors of the Academy. Those who walk this path are reminded of the history the Academy has built its legacy on, and of the knowledge that those who stand tall in the face of adversity carve a path for the rest of their people to follow. Above the doors to the school is a carved message, scrawled in script:

Welcome to the Academies! With the revamp of Thirteen, there will also now be a dedicated space for the Academies themselves within the Thirteen board. We created this page not only to give more history behind the schools, but to help keep track of the different recruits for both schools, as we have some fun ideas surrounding their rivalry that we would love to have happen in the future!
This page is purely for organizational purposes, there are no limits to the Academies in terms of your own personal plots. Have as many recruits as you'd like, and feel free to use this page as a reference for who else they'd be interacting with at the schools!
Have a character that's showing their bravery at one of the Academies? Let 'em know babes!Username:
