Declan wanted more, even when the greys started to show, and the wrinkles began to take over. Two growing sons, a loving wife. Really, what more could he possibly want? Though there was no balance in the time he spent in the factory versus at home with his family. The years went by and one day he came home to find both sons had moved out. Both sons had married. Both sons had kids of their own. Where did time go?

His life was consumed within that silver box that he calls a workplace. More so now for the experiments on the classified Profoundling. Something he so wanted to present to Snow himself but failure after failure has pushed back its success, now Snow is dead and there is a whole council to present the human-enhancing super drug too. Its simple really, a mix of steroids, recreational mind sparking drugs to maybe create a super-career tribute or peacekeeper. The Capitol will really pay a lot for it.

”It should take ten seconds from injection for the symptoms to come into effect…hopefully.” Declan tells one of the many subjects. Mostly volunteers from the factory or a morphling zombie he has dragged out from the street. ”Don’t worry, the fatal side-effects have been worked out of the drug.” Though the unfortunate soul that is strapped to the surgical seat is not the first and probably won’t be the last. ”Dec, he is having a heart attack!”

”Fuck, not again. Why can we never get this right?” The defibrillator Dec has against the subject’s chest is not enough to cure the cardiac arrest. ”We need to stop this Dec, there have never been so many deaths in a drug trial.”

”Who says we are recording the deaths? Poor man had a heart attack while at work. Its not uncommon. It just needs a few tweaks.”

”We have been working on this for years. We may as well sell it as a serial killer’s toxin. I can’t do this anymore.”

”You have no faith Derek. No faith.”

Derek Thatcher has threatened retirement for years and Jasmine, now retired begs for Declan to join her. Seventy-something year old pharmacists meddling with chemicals and lives behind the closed doors of a very successful pharmaceutical empire, time is really running out. Derek has no family to hand the baton too.

Both of Declan’s sons have followed their mothers into the surgical field but what about his grandchildren?

There are plenty of them, clever little things. Benen’s son isn’t spoiled by the wicked wife of his but then comes the eighty-seventh hunger games. Declan Garner did not watch a single second of his grandson in the arena, didn’t even bother to wish him goodbye at the justice building. It was over. Onto to the next grandchild to groom and take over the business. But he came home. He came home with that free pass to the Capitol. The perfect prodigy to present a gift to the world. Maybe even a perfect subject after proving himself so deadly at such a young age…

But time for Declan is running out.
