When Six saw his sister, it took all of his strength not to start crying. Well... to start crying again. His eyes were red and puffy, indicating he was crying earlier. He told himself he wouldn't cry in front of any of his younger siblings. His older ones? They were fair game. But that's because they were old enough to understand. They understood how terrified he was. And they also understood that he was still a kid. His younger siblings? He needed to be brave for them. They were probably scared of losing their big brother. They probably wanted to cry just as much as he did. And while he was still a kid, they were even younger. They deserved to cry more so he had to be the strong one.
Right now? He felt ready to be the strong one for the short conversation he would have with Fly. As the peacekeepers escorted him into the room he forced a smile onto his face that vanished as quickly as it came. Being strong didn't mean straight up lying. Being brave didn't mean smiling in the face of death. That was just being stupid or a liar or both, and Six didn't want to be either of those. He moved to hug his little sister, holding her tightly. His legs and arms felt like jelly, but he refused to shake. She needed him to be brave.
There was so much he felt she didn't know. Some of it he wished he had the time to teach her, and some he hoped she would never find out. He wanted to teach her what an amazing young lady she was. He wanted to show her how brave she really was. It took someone brave to come see him right now. She was his little hero. But, he wasn't going to talk unless he had to. He wanted to make sure she didn't have to leave anything unsaid like he did.
As for the things better left unsaid? Those were the things like the fact that he had over a 95% chance of dying. The things like the fact this could be the last goodbye. The fact he might never get to watch her become and one day live up to her amazing amount of potential. The fact he would probably die alone and bloody. He refused to voice any of that. Maybe voicing it would make him feel better. But it would put imagery in Fly's head she didn't need. That's another thing he hoped she would never find out. Six hoped Fly would never know how he currently felt. The mix of fear and adrenaline. He hoped she would never know how it feels to stare death right in the face.
He wasn't going to lie down and accept his death though. After seeing her that reinforced it in his head. He had to try to come back for her. For all of his siblings. He just had to. He hated the idea of killing someone. Hell, when there was a bug in one of his siblings room he would catch and release it rather than let anyone actually kill it. He even got stung by a wasp once just so no one would kill it while he tried to release it. But, he realised he loved his family more than he feared Hell. He was ready to sacrifice everything for them. He wanted them to remember him as brave if he didn't make it.
"Fly, are you doing okay? I promise you I'm going to try my hardest to come back to you, Fly. I'm your big brother, after all."
