I watch out the window as long as I can, call out my goodbyes until I'm certain I'm too far away to be heard, wave until Gav's nothing but a tiny spec of silhouette on the horizon and my arm starts to pinch funny in the window I've got it stuck out of.

I stumble into a chair nearby—"Oh, sorry- oh, ha."—apologizing to it profusely before realizing it was an inanimate object. I sigh, real tired all of sudden—I make sure to smile when I'm speaking though. Mom raised me better than to be impolite.

"Blade, right?" She's smaller than me, but that's just because everyone is. I think? Actually, no, I think maybe she's also younger. Small and small, y'know? "That's a badass name- oh! er, sorry for cursing, my bad."

I chuckle as I sit, maybe smiling too big and maybe feeling too much like a kid in a candy shop, but there's just too much to see and so many people around to introduce myself- oh no, I forgot to-

I stand abruptly and offer my hand for the shaking—"I'm sorry, heh. I'm Chad by the way, nice to meet you."—hoping she'll forgive me for forgetting. Though I am fully prepared to offer her the entire bottle of whatever fancy golden, sparkling liquid was sitting in front of us if she didn't. Even though I really do want to try some.

"i wonder if you look both ways when you cross my mind."

Y'know I thought I'd be in more shock than this. I thought I was the type of person to break down or lose my ability to speak, but I'm feeling a strange sense of okay-ness about all of this. Perhaps its my curiosity about what the Capitol holds, perhaps it's because I actually believe I can do this, or perhaps I'm just looking out the window in a marvel at what lays beyond Five.

It's not much, mostly rolling fields and trees and the occasional ruin of a building that once was, but it's more than I've ever seen in my life. I've grown up surrounding by so much pollution that even on the clearest, sunniest of days you can barely see the surrounding mountains. Here, outside of factories and plumes of smoke, Panem is kind of beautiful.

The boy from home should set me on edge, tall and lean and his arms are twice the size of mine, but he's kind of comforting. Silly and gangly and good-natured, it's nice to pretend that I won't have to try outrun him in a few weeks from now. I grin at his compliment - Blade is a badass name. One good thing my Mom gave me was an edge on a first impression.

"It's alright - swearing's fucking cool with me" I reply, all the while knowing my mother would think me abhorrent for encouraging such behaviour. But she's not here, and I smile at that thought. Time to be me, for a change - no supervision.

"It's nice to meet you Chad."

And I mean it. I'm glad he's here with me, making me feel less rigid and more at-ease with all of this. Two's company, after all. I take his hand in mine and meet his greeting with a shake - firm, but not menacing. I still want him to like me, even when we're pointing swords at each-other in the arena. His eyes glance from me to the bottle in front of us and I think it'd be rude not to get acquainted while parched, right?

"Want me to pour you some?" I ask, gesturing toward the bottle of liquid gold and picking up two crystal glasses nicer than anything I've ever drunk from.

Curious, I pop open the bottle and eye the liquid cautiously - "I bet it burns."
