“You look quite normal in hologram. Less psychotic, no?”

He threw the crushed hairpin he’d been sponsored at hologram-Love’s nose and snickered when it whooshed through with a ripple of light. In the humid dark, the holographic poster of them glowed brightly like a signboard or a monument to their plan. It had worked spectacularly. To Panem, Love and Julian were love birds caged in a cruel game, oh how tragic of them.

His eyes drifted towards the other then. Sprawled on their bed of grass the way Julian was, he looked oddly normal for once, less psychotic as he’d put it, his cheeks drawn in sharply by the holograph’s light and his eyes dulled by a resting gleam that for a moment, he saw Love for who he thought he truly was – a boy, just like him, here to fulfil a handful of expectations. Will it all be worth it? he wondered.

Will it all be worth the broken bones, the gaping wounds, and the hundred scars?

His thought got severed as Love drawled, “you’re full of flattery tonight, yeah?” He rolled his eyes despite the unbidden smirk that came on. “Got any other insults in your book for me besides psychotic and sociopathic?”

Julian deadpanned. “Yes but those words capture the essence, don’t you agree? And besides,” he looked down at the knife the other was toying with like a restless house cat, “princes don’t insult their subjects outwardly. It’s very uncouth.” And then he let out a chuckle, surprising himself. Word play between them had always been a nice back and forth, making him hate it further. They weren’t close to lovers and they sure weren’t friends. If Love wanted to, he could plant that knife in between his ribs.

The only thought that offered Julian comfort was how he wouldn’t let it happen unrequited.

He ignored his next words, turning back on a subject they had skimmed over before. “What is your plan with Chad?” he asked lowly. “I am no stranger to the ruthless nature of these things but … I won’t kill a defenseless person, Love.” That’s not me, he wanted to protest but ultimately that meant taking pleasure in a lie. Because it did belong to a part of him, a cruel part he desperately kept leashed and sedated. The Gamemakers know of it. Emerson knew of it. He wanted to keep it a surprise from Love but what escapes a fox's eyes?

Nothing, that’s what.

“My plan?” the other tilted his head, eyes narrowing into slants. “My plan was to kill him back at the Cornucopia, which you and Waverly decided wasn’t worth throwing your shattered moral compasses out the window for.” He scoffed. It was true yet he scoffed anyway. “Honestly, Jules, it seems to me like both you and your cousin are strangers to all of this.” And because Love Bellisario loved his wounds slathered in salt, he added:

“or, were, in Emie’s case.”

That would have been enough excuse for his moral compass to permit unleashing himself on the other. That would have been enough, and yet it oddly wasn’t. He searched for ire but instead found pity. That, and a strange kind of melancholy.

“Or, maybe you just want to be a stranger to it,” Love said.

“It’s better than reveling in it,” he replied in a gentler tone than he wished for. Julian then sprang up, drawing in a fortifying breath as he did. “Keep watch of them,” a nod at Waverly and Chad. “I fancy a midnight stroll.”

It was about time to see the stars alone.

A few twenty or so steps in, it happened.

It happened in a searing flash that all but caught his breath, snatched his gaze—and twisted his heart. She demanded it all. There, between clouds, taking to the skies with a burning luminosity, Emerson Le Roux was a sun, a star, a moon, and every luminous thing that all eyes can’t help but be drawn to. Her eyes demanded a look. Her face ordered a glance. She was the only one there and she damned well gloried in it.

And from the dark, Julian smiled. He was proud of her.

He was so damn proud of her.

“What did I tell you about these biceps being nice pillows, darling? You look as well as a freshly-painted portrait.” That was his good morning to Love. But the soft whir of the drone behind them demanded more, so with an amused curl of his lips, he drew closer for a quick cheek kiss. “It’s good luck,” he said and winked.

Foreboding as it was, the arena glowed as they went deeper into it. The longer their tread through the plains went, the more everything seemed like false bliss in their spring-themed hues of rose, emerald, and bronze in everything he saw—grass, roses, trees, spurs, exhilarating to take in. The farthest oaks reaching to the summer sky looked drawn in. The musky sweetness of wood hung in the hot air over a damp perfume of blooming leaves. Light felt shot through the wind, seen underwater. It was heady in all sense of the word, so he sought a balance.

“How many badges did you get by the way?” Julian asked, pacing his steps to match Love’s. “It’s insulting that they haven’t given us a ‘lovers’ one.” Do the Gamemakers know it's a sham? He wouldn’t put it past them. Or, perhaps they were waiting on one of them to die for the widowed badge.

And how apt that at the end of that thought, pain ripped through the back of his head and knocked him off-kilter—right into Love. A cry tore itself raw from his throat. Everything was shapes. The pain. Julian gnashed his teeth, felt his eyes water. And when every color sewed itself back grotesquely together, they were sprawled over the grass, him on Love.

When he rolled off of the other, his machete accompanied the movement with a flash.

"You're full of flattery tonight, yeah?" Love fiddles with the hunting knife in his grasp, staring coldly at the holographic poster in front of them. It'd fallen in a sweep of red and gold, parachute blanketing it in its final resting place on the grass as they'd settled down for the night. They'd played it up from the cameras, all squeezed grasps and kisses on bloody cheeks until the drones had finally left them to their own devices. They'd separated into their own worlds then, a parasite and a predator and neither of them knowing which was which.

Now Love sits with a knife laced in his fingertips, absentmindedly twirling it in his grasp as Julian speaks. A frown dances across his face at the toss of the hairpin, gaze drifting over to Julian. “Got any other insults in your book for me besides psychotic or sociopathic?” He muses, lobbing a softball into Julian's way just for the entertainment of watching him try and knock it out of the park.

Here we go again, he thinks to himself as Julian launches into a fantasy of kings and queens and powerful princes. His teeth grate together at the words, clenched jaw and a knife suddenly finding its blade slammed down into the ground. Love arches an eyebrow at Julian’s words, biting back the scowl that wants so desperately to etch itself onto his face. Prince, Love repeats his words in the back of his mind, hung up on just how ridiculous they sound as they play. Finally, he shrugs, shaking his head in the tired defeat of the day’s antics. “Like I said, Jules. We’re more alike than you want us to be. Guess that makes me a faulty prince too.”

No response. Love grins with bared fangs as Julian continues.

"What is your plan with Chad? I am not a stranger to the ruthless nature of these things but... I won't kill a defenseless person, Love."

“My plan?” Love tilts his head, narrowing his eyes as he processes his next words. “My plan was to kill him back at the Cornucopia, which you and Waverly decided wasn’t worth throwing your shattered moral compasses out the window for.” He shakes his head softly, rolling his eyes before slumping back into the grass, his hands behind his head as a makeshift pillow. “Honestly, Jules, it seems to me like both you and your cousin are strangers to all of this-

A sprinkle of salt and a dash of arrogance across an unhealed wound, curled claws scratching against the scabbed broken heart Julian wears on his sleeve. “Or, maybe you just want to be a stranger to it.” He perks his head up as he lays, letting his words settle into the smoke and mirrors between them. Silence and crashing heartbeats and-

"It's better than reveling in it." Julian finally replies, voice softened with salt laced into the wound. Love waits for the satisfaction for a moment, but it never comes. It's a won battle in a hopeless war, Julian announcing his departure with all the claimed confidence of a shoddy prince.

"Difference between recognizing and reveling." He comments, chewing on the words like he’s trying to convince himself of it too. He shoves the doubt down, bitter aftertaste left in his hate and his heart. “Don’t go too far. And remember..

“Watch your six and your Seven.”

The latter comes back in holographic haunting as the Anthem slips into the night sky, trumpets blaring and erupting through the sky, the clouds seemingly moving out of the way to give them all their own personal view of the only one lost that day. The gold of a Le Roux is replaced by icy blue, Emie's face flickering softly into his view.

Emerson Le Roux was a sun, dangerously bold and blindingly hot and burning so intensely that it threatened to rip his skin from his bones and turn it into nothing but ashes and embers swaying softly in the wind. He's glad he let the boy from Seven snuff out her dangerous light.

One down, one and twenty two more to go. Love thinks to himself as he meets Emerson's glare, unflinching in the night sky. Even in death she is all bared fang and venomous words, and it's as if he can still hear her speaking in vile tones to him behind closed doors. Love narrows his eyes at the portrait of Emerson Le Roux, a wounded lion turned to a girl dead and gone, six feet under and he's dancing on her grave. I won't remember you, he tells himself. The satisfaction bubbles up slowly as he lays there, pride swelling softly in his heart.

Yet, maybe he is wrong.

That night he dreams of broken things.

Broken things still rest in his nightmares the next morning.

It's as if he's still caught in poisoned smoke and shattered mirrors when he finally wakes up again, feeling the jagged shards of diamond and glass press themselves under his skin and into his soul. Julian's left arm is still tucked underneath his head and his right draped lazily across Love's chest, remnants of when he'd finally returned from his midnight stroll into the void.

The bags under his eyes are big enough to fit a body, they bare their fangs and dig their claws into the soft flesh of his face until there are unwanted tears welling up at the edges of his vision, clear liquid a contrast to the bloodshot veins that ripple and crack around blue irises. He lies still in Julian's grasp for what feels like an eternity too long, hearing nothing but the soft thumps of his own rattling heartbeat in hollow chest and the sounds of a bird calling sweet nothings out into the air of an arena that was still asleep.

It's sobering and it's harrowing and it's terrifying, to exist as if you're the only thing still breathing in a space of dead hearts.

By the time he realizes that is all he's ever known the arena is finally stirring and, with it, Julian and his allies begin to rise as well. “What did I tell you about these biceps being nice pillows, darling?" Julian's voice is laced in morning grogginess and sweet nothings, clawing its way into Love's ears and the latter does not respond at first, keeps his eyes trained on the same patch of grass and weeds that he'd been watching with shallow breaths all morning. And it's like the arena responds in huffs and puffs and a sigh to his delayed response, a gust of wind pulling the grass sideways and ripping the snow white petals of a dandelion from their resting place and up into the air.

It takes a heartbeat and a half for them to disappear from his view. By the time they do so he has zipped himself back into a diamond studded suit of heavy expectations. He feels the claws dig into his shoulders when he flips over to meet Julian's gaze, a twisted reflection of himself. "You weren't lyin'.. morning pretty." He starts, bringing a palm softly to Julian's cheek and forcing a smile as the familiar sound of a drone's motors slips into their hearing. He returns Julian's kiss with one of his own, hollow and empty and flaunted in pink and red for the cameras. "Just in case we both need some luck." Said with a smile of pearly whites and blood-stained fangs.

They walk in a single line through an arena too kind for its own good, weapons drawn and voices no more than soft whispers to avoid catching any unwanted attention from alliances both deadly or not. Love's gaze snaps to Julian as he leads the way, feeling his fingertips instinctively curl around the hilt of his axe as he traces his vision down the neck of a boy the world wants him to love, noting how simple it would be to drive the blade of his axe into his spine and let a cape of red fit for a prince spill out onto his back. At least, that is what he'd envision it to be, all Career extravagance and killing blow and unrivaled victory. He could take Waverly down with little more than a huff and a puff, and Chad? Well, Chad was too busy getting distracted by the flowers and-

"Hey Chad, eyes up here my man." Love says plainly as his thought comes true before him, the group stopping in place and turning back to their newfound ally as he sits admiring the newest batch of the same fucking flowers that he'd seen a few hundred feet prior. Love chokes back a sigh and tightens his grip on the axe until his knuckles bleed white, brief memories of watching Chad swallow down all of his iodine tablets in one sitting the evening prior. Love had watched with raised eyebrow and tilted head, and truthfully he'd secretly hoped that it would have been enough to kill the poor guy. But as Chad rejoins their group he comes to terms with the fact that it had probably only emboldened the kid, someway somehow.

"Hmm?" He responds absently to Julian's initial question as he turns back around, following his gaze down to the sash that sat draped across his own chest. "Oh, three. Teacher's pet one was for the training session I think." He bites into the chip on his shoulder with a smile and a shrug before a frown replaces it. "Was hoping for something more. Maybe like, a spiked bat or something summery." Love feels Julian's fingertip brush against the plated metal that is laced into the fabric, smirking at his notion of the smoke and mirrors of their relationship actually earning them a reward. "Maybe we just have to prove it to 'em a bit more, huh?" He leans into the narrative and reaches out to raise Julian's chin up to his own, leaning in for a kiss.

Instead, Julian's head slams into his own with accidental force, a chorus of sighs and a gasp of pain accompanying the motion as the mutt recoils back from Julian's head, carrying with it a drawn curtain of red and black in his blood. They topple backwards with the momentum, Love forced down onto one knee in an awkward position as Julian stumbles into him with a tidal wave of pain. The latter's tears slip from his eyes and land on Love's face as he struggles to balance them, quickly pushing up from the ground and steadying them as Waverly and Chad ready their weapons. Palm to shoulder and he adjusts Julian's stance, his gaze shifting once to the mutts and then back to the wounded pride as he weighs the option of helping the mutts finish him off.

He knows his choice with a nod and a glance to his other allies. "Now's the time to fuckin' learn Chad, drop the daisies and pick up some steel." He says coldly, before twisting on his heel and using the momentum to launch the axe forwards towards the nearest muttation.

I can't stop thinking about Gavin. My eye is swelling shut, but I manage to find something that looks really close to Cassiopeia in the sky that may or may not be real and trace it along my chest the way it is across his back. I wish I knew for sure if the stars were real, but that's alright—sometimes it's better to play pretend than to hurt.

Anyway, my face feels miserable, but I can't help but smile at the stars and trace the edges of the photo in my chest pocket as I walk. I nearly break my entire ankle tripping over a tree root, but it've been worth it if I had because I saw a shooting star in the sky that may or may not be real—and if I pretend I can believe Gav saw it, too. The thought helps me sleep, so it can't be so bad, right?

Julian and Love are talking about biceps. And, yeahhhh, my ears only started listening when I heard the word, but that's just details. I make a point to unlisten to not be rude. I just wish I could have Gav here; I really want to hold his hand, run my thumb over his knuckles and squeeze just a little too hard. His hands just fit so perfectly in mine, like we'd been cut from the same image, interlocking pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

It's hard not to think about him when my uniform fits so tight that the edges of the photo are visible in my chest pocket. I'm not sure if Lysander helped with my measurements or if maybe I told her wrong, but even my sponsored armor pinches a bit, my gloves only covering my fingers and forearm going numb.

But that's alright. I don't need my fingers since my flower friend fits so nicely behind my ear that I don't have to hold them anymore. I stoop to inspect a funny, possibly camera looking, pebble—"Oh, I got one! It's got a lion on it, see?"—showing off the sash that was beginning to fill up with a bruised, split-lip grin on my face.

And then everything is growling and buzzing and it's horrifying because I can smell blood before I see it arcing, splattering, dripping from the back of Julian's head. And I can hear them yelling at me, telling me I shouldn't be running toward the nearest cabin for safety, but it's- I mean, it's a giant wasp thing with arms that practically glint in the sunlight they're so sharp, excuse me? I can hit things real hard if I have to, but why wouldn't I try finding- I don't know, a shotgun first or something?

I crash through the door of the cabin and into silence, slamming it behind me and bracing against it for a moment as I look frantically around the dimly lit space with the whistle Nora told me to blow if I needed her clutched tightly in my grasp. Only I can't see any-

Glass shatters around my feet as the big bug smashes through the window and lashes downward at my feet. I yelp in pain, my too tight boots saving me from having a scythe-like limb all the way through my foot. I kick at it until it darts away, smashing against the cabins corridors before readying itself for another attack.

I'm breathing heavy, eyes wide and fists shaking as I raise them up in front of me. I wince as I take a step, but remember that I have fishing pole that'd probably make a good fly swatter.

And since Blade said it's cool-

"Fuck."

My voice is shaky and I have to swallow down my heart, but I make sure to chuckle before I lash out—I don't want to risk the silence freezing me solid.

It was an oddly calm night filled with more sleep than she had ever expected.

Waverly barely slept at home, but after staying up for her turn on watch she knew her allies were safe and she drifted off into a deep sleep only to be aroused by Chad’s gentle nudging. She had dreamed and even though she couldn’t remember exactly what they entailed she remembered them being oddly pleasant.

Surprising when she was trapped in a place that was the exact opposite.

A place that was no where near pleasant.

It was a place that was cold and dark and frightening and filled with Death.

But it was a place that felt surprisingly like home.

The group seemed to have put a good amount of distance between themselves and any other tributes. No matter how closely she listened she heard no signs of any others. Just their own footsteps and the occasional sound of Chad humming.

Waverly followed up in the rear of the group. Not by choice, but simply because her body ached too much to move any faster. She was bloodied and bruised and broken and she swore that these stains would never come out of her camp uniform. She sighed a little as she tried to keep up with the three abnormally large men in front of her, but even her best effort wasn’t enough. They were quite a few feet in front of her and just as she was about to sit and catch her breath she heard Julian cry out in pain.

”Waverly get your weapons out, and Chad,” Quickly she pulled one of the knives out of the makeshift holster on her sash and brandished it the best she could.

“Well, Love only ever taught me how to use a bow and arrow so I’m really not sure how much of a help I’ll be.”

Adrenaline rushed through her body and she moved quickly enough to see Chad barge through the door of the nearest cabin. She went inside after him to make sure he hadn’t hurt himself.

”Chad sweetie, there’s a door knob you know. Maybe next time let’s use that so we don’t- woah!” she had just noticed the giant ugly bug that had invited itself in and cringed.

”Careful! There’s broken glass!” and without another thought she let her knife fly.

Hoping it was similar enough to a bow.

Here in this forest, all know to fear what falls from your descent. Let them see you bleed before you make a meal of them. It can be their final false hope as you find something far more satisfactory in their failure to fight.

Really, he could just feint all of his attacks, hope the Gamemakers were wise enough to pick up what he was doing. It would be a carefully planned slaughter, a fleshed-out massacre. The Capitol trades in entertainment, so what would it mean if the games lost two of its most riveting acts back to back? Nothing good. It would mean nothing good. He could do it. He could leave them for death.

But instead, his sword flashes out and the wolf’s blood splatters in a bright streak of color on the grass. Julian hops onto his feet not a second later, retrieving footing, trying to steady his breathing. It's like training, he told his muscles. Training coupled with a side of fanged beasts and real, terrifying dangers. Glass breaks; Chad had barged into a cabin uninvited. Waverly followed. His eyes darted towards Love, the other’s back to him.

He could do it.

“Love—” he lurched to his feet, pushing the other out of wolf’s sudden lunge, sparing him from more injury than what’d been etched onto his skin, and Julian knew that he couldn’t do it. And that, that scared him more than anything. His heart. His stupid, foolish, lion heart. Julian swore to not be a martyr but something in him wanted to protect and keep others out of harm’s way. He could only imagine Ridley’s derision to this brashness. He could only imagine his father’s.

And still, “you okay?” he asked Love a little breathlessly, now back to back with the other, his knuckles white around the machete’s hilt. “Chad and Waverly,” he said, searching for the two again. The green-scaled creature had them cornered and Julian muttered a choice word under his breath. “On the count of three, you go for the head, I’ll go for the body,” he told Love, nodding back towards the wolf. In that sliver of a second, Julian smirked at the other over his shoulder. “One,” his eyes gleamed, “two,” he faced the wolf again, “three—”

He dreams of Emerson first.

He's carrying her from the Bloodbath, weighted body of a dying girl wrapped in his arms and the distant screams and shouts of clashing metal and torn through skin slipping softly into the background. Emerson chokes on her own spit and her own blood and her own-

She's growing heavier, so much heavier.

His eyes glance down as they run, catching Emerson's body turning a sickly shade of red and he falters in his movements, stops and digs his feet into the dirt as diamond laces itself over Emerson's flesh, quickly stained red with the blood that flows endlessly from her throat. She chokes something illegible once, twice, words laced black and red and maroon and she's so fucking heavy. His arms shake and rattle under the pressure and he can't tell if he's holding a dying girl or his own pressures, his own diamond legacy stained red and-

He blinks and she is gone from his grasp but her weight is not, he feels his arms drop to his side with a force like no other dragging them down.

"Watch your six." A voice calls from behind him, and before he can turn around he sees a hand dart forth from his peripheral vision, catches the soft hint of metal from a rusted blade as it arches around his neck.

He's an eternity too late, the tip of a knife plunges itself into his throat, leaving a hole fit for his own hell in its wake.

He chokes on his own sins stained red and black, feeling them spill out from the hole in his throat and onto his chest. Ripples and cracks form against the surface of his skin, they run their course up and down his body and within seconds he's watching his skin shatter into a million little shards of diamond stained red.

His knees buckles and falter and he collapses to the dirt, desperately trying to breathe in and only being met with the metallic bite of his own death. Emerson walks from behind him until she stands stoic in front, running her fingers up and down the blade of her knife and collecting his blood under her fingernails. It's the claws of a lion against rusted steel, soft metallic roar slipping out from the action and pounding against his eardrums.

His eyes trail up from her feet and find her gaze, his hands desperately trying to quell the waves of red that spill forth from his throat. Instead the digits crack and shatter as soon as he touches the wound, shards collapsing to the dust and the dirt below. Emerson's eyes are completely white, hollow, filled with nothing but the white storm he'd let her drown in and he can feel the empty rage that lays in them as she stares down, tilting her head and carving the same shit-eating grin he'd weapon used against her so many times onto her face. She reaches out for his face, and though everything in his power tells him to snap back from her embrace his body is frozen solid by blood loss and his own mortality, eyes doing nothing but staring as her fingertips finally grab his jaw.

It burns.

Softly, for a single heartbeat and then all at once. Fire courses up from where her claws connected and sears through his cheeks, it draws daggers and plunges them into his eyes and douses his mind in kerosene just to watch it engulf itself in fire. He goes to gasp in pain and horror and- regret, but his own body fails him once more and instead all he's left with his more blood spewing out in the fire of a boy that is destined to be forgotten. Emerson lifts his head until their eyes are closer than he'd ever want them to be, leaned in until he can feel the ice cold breaths of a girl who was burning him from the inside out.

"I won't remember you." She finally says, before slipping silently into the darkness. With his final heartbeats he does the same.

Julian's hands connect with his back in a forceful shove, Love stumbling quickly to his right and feeling the soft graze of the wolf's claws scratch against the back of his head. His eyes had tracked Chad's erratic movements over to the cabin, a slammed door and crashed window and Waverly's voice in the distance. Chad is nothing if not helpless, desperately throwing the whip laced in his hands at the wasp mutation with reckless abandon as he ran. He'd waited for his cannon in shallow heartbeats and grating teeth, fingertips curling tight around the second axe that he pulls from the strap on his back.

He'd waited for Chad's death like he'd waited for Emerson, iced over heart and bared fangs coated in poison.

Only silence had greeted him and it was in the span of a heartbeat that he'd realized his mistake and his greed, hearing the snarl of the wolf he'd turned his back to as it'd lunged at him. Julian had been the saving grace in an arena that contained nothing of the sort, and as Love turns back around with axe raised he locks eyes with his fellow Career, "I'm fine." He says, crown of red dripping from the shallow cuts that are littered around his head.

So they're on the same page. For now, at least.

"Thanks." He mutters as he stand back to back with Julian, white-knuckled hands gripping his axe. Julian Le Roux was kinder than he was. That would be his downfall.

Julian lunges at the wolf, the mutt responding faster than either of them had expected and dancing out of the deadly blow, his sword merely grazing its hip. Red seeps forth from the cut slowly, staining the wolf's matted grey fur with a sickly reminder that neither of them were doing enough to put it out of it's misery. "We need more than just paper cuts, Jules." He throws out a needless reminder and watches Julian grit his teeth in frustration.

"C'mon little lion, bare those fangs."

He doesn't wait for a response before he swings towards the wolf.

Love attacks Duowolf with axe

He brings his axe down hard on the wolf's head as it focuses on Julian's recent cut, his grip unwavering as the metal collides with the mutts skull and buries itself deep into its brain. A single yelp and a helpless snarl and it collapses under the attack, twitching hopelessly in its final moments. Love presses his foot against the wolf's chest and pulls, ripping the axe from its head and splattering blood across his neck and face in the process.

He turns to Julian with a smirk and a tilted head. "Told you we needed a harder hit."

He wipes the smirk from his face and brings the axe to rest on his shoulder, nodding his head towards the commotion in the cabin. "C'mon, lets kill this other fucker before Chad tries to offer it a flower or something.

And Chad is very much like- "Oh! Sorry, I- I'll fix it!" in reference to doorknob usage, and then immediately tries to fix the door and breaks it off its hinges. Panics some more. Apologizes because he is baby, watches out for all the glass because not watching for it would mean he wasn't listening to Waverly and he totally was. And then he probably tries to chuck the door at the thing and misses so he gets his whip out again because yo bug? Nah.
