" 𝑰 𝒔𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒏 𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒐𝒑𝒔 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒂𝒗𝒂𝒍𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒄𝒉 𝒎𝒆 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒆𝒕 𝒈𝒐. "
After the adrenaline had faded and Six calmed down, things were different this time than they had been after previous fights. Before the first thing that hit him was panic or the pain. He felt both those things, but there was something stronger there. Fear. Fear not about his injuries or the mutts or other tributes. Fear towards his own actions.
Fear towards how he felt when he was killing the mutts. He had no remorse at the time, no hesitation. In fact, his blood got pumping and he felt excited. And when he heard the blast of the cannon? It only fueled him. That wasn't who he was, it wasn't Six O'Malley. He was so focused on living, he didn't care who got hurt. And while he wanted to live, he wondered if it was worth it.
At this point if he returned home, would his family recognize him? What about Vasco? Or Kass and Ivan? Would they still see the same farmboy from District Eleven? The only thing that comforted him was how quickly the tides changed after he asked God for help. Maybe it was a coincidence, or maybe it was a sign that God understood why he was doing what he was doing. And that he was sorry.
Once things were calm he let Evan and Thad know he had to do something alone, that he'd find them before dark and leave the door to whatever cabin he was in propped open. Until he was certain the fire inside him - the same one that had stabbed Mauve - had died down he didn't want to risk hurting one of them. He cared about both of them, even Evan. He didn't realize what a mistake that would be.
Almost immediately after he left the duo a silver parachute descended from the sky. He opened it up was puzzled at the contents. A flimsy plastic fork with a note attached. He hoped the note had some answers as to why he got a fork, but instead all it had was answers about who sent it. I told you not to close your eyes. This was definitely from Ivan in reference to his mutt fight. But why? Why spend so much money for a reminder? Maybe Ivan was just worried about him.
After taking a little bit of a walk Six found a cabin and propped the door wide open with a rock. Once inside he found a few supplies and added them to his fanny pack before getting work on fixing some injuries. While he was at it he made sure to drink water, the dehydration was really starting to get to him. As he worked on his injuries he was grateful. Grateful that he wasn't missing any body parts like Thad or Evan.
As he finished with what medical treatment he could do he noticed a small stuffed animal and picked it up. Maybe it was stupid, but it reminded him of the pill bug he found at the challenge course. Something to make him feel a little less lonely and a whole lot more human while he stayed in the arena. And this he didn't have to worry about dying. As he picked it up he heard footsteps approaching from outside. He didn't turn around at first, but when he did he let out one word as he fumbled for the first thing he could think of to protect him - a flimsy plastic fork from Ivan.
"Mauve."
