'All women have a taste for hearts'

She's old enough to remember the nights that she spent huddled in front of the fire, watching the way that mother mended the dresses brought to them from the wealthy women in Four. She's old enough to know that even though her mother was the best seamstress in the district, she was far more skilled at patching up skin than silk. Dad owned Pelion and it was more of a money suck than anything else, but somehow they got by.

But Mama's dead now and it falls to her to take up the mantle of the house. Keep the hearth warm, Hes, she had always said to her. And when she was younger, she always felt such anticipation coursing through her veins at the thought of keeping and running a house of her home. A house of warmth and love and—okay maybe sometimes fighting and shouting, but isn't that what family's all about?

Ares, Dio, and Hades seem to have taken it upon themselves to start—something. They haven't told Hestia and—it stings, the way the alcohol burns down Dio's through or the way that Ares always sucks in his breath too sharply when she patches up the stab wounds or the black eyes.

She yells at them weekly about the blood that they track in on her floors. Dad had left them Pelion and while its nothing more than a crumbling pub with wooden floors and rafters that are swollen with the salt air, it's hers and it's theirs and it becomes—it becomes a sanctuary.

She learns to cook and to bake. She learns how to mend like Mama always did, because maybe Pelion isn't home, but it's hers.

She's up before the morning sun, waiting on the bread that she had left overnight to prove and rise. Flour dusts her cheek and Hades walks by most mornings, rubbing it off with his thumb. With everyone else, he's cold, but with her, his chill always seemed dulled. It could be the fire within her.

She wants to protect. She's always wanted to protect them. And maybe she isn't the most skilled with a sword or a gun, but she can sew up stab wounds and gashes just as good as Mama could (even better probably), and she keeps her supplies stocked for when they inevitably stumble home, dripping in blood from whatever the hell they've been up to all night.

She hears whispers of it sometimes—when they think they're being quiet enough to speak about it at Pelion, in the backroom that seems to have become Ares' hangout more than anything. Touching a flyaway brown tress behind her ear, Hestia strains to understand what they mean because they've shut her out for years and she could be—she could be useful, right?

She could at least do something—

Ares comes to bother her the next evening, while she's sharpening her knives, her head ducked low over the table in the backroom. Potato and leek soup is simmering over the fire.

He whistles some stupid tune or another, fingertips grazing over the bowl of blackberries that she's eating as she worked.

"Where ya going?"

"None ya," he says back, the flippant fucking asshole.

"Ares—I could—you know I could be useful for whatever—"

"No, Hes. It's not—we don't want you involved. It's better this way."

"If you're fighting again—"

"You'll patch me up like you always do."

Great, conversation over. He drops a kiss to her cheek and she scrunches her face up. She should have stabbed him, she thinks later, as she sweeping up the floors.

Or maybe she'll just poison his food and Dio's wine. With a chuckle, she places the broom back in its spot, her hands above her head to stretch her back.

They need her, she thinks, as she gathers up the dishes, the Pelion closed for the night. She just had to show them that they did.
