THE HORSE RACE

Welcome competitors to another County Fair event! You are better off letting go of your horses in this one as it is time to race! This is one big race and spans across 4 miles of District Ten flatlands. There will be markers out on the land directing you where to go as well as stewards to ensure that nobody is cutting corners!

This is a test of skill and endurance. Do you and your horse have the fitness levels to survive 4 miles in the heat and come home in good time?

You may bring your own horse, any shape or size or use one sponsored by the Halfinger Horse Ranch. Speak to Morgan Halfinger whilst signing up to be paired with the perfect horse for this event.

Dice rolls
[*roll=20000+40000]
If you roll 60000 it will be translated into 600.00(seconds). The shortest time wins.

Fall dice
[*roll=1-50]
1-48 - Do not fall
49-50 fall off

There is a small chance you may fall off your horse. If this happens, a 15 second time penalty will be added to your time but you may continue the race. The fall can happen anytime IC.

Glad to be allowed to bring her own horse, she had decided to have her beloved horse, Apple, be the one she would ride for the horse race. Leah had been racing for quite a while now, but more-so casually than anything else. She really enjoyed it, and deemed herself to be decent at it, even if no one had ever really timed how quickly she went around the course when she rode.

Apple seemed more confident than her rider, which could have been either a good thing or a bad thing, with only one way to really find out. When the race was about to begin, Apple was given a pat on the head by Leah-Cassandra. Then, Leah readied herself atop the horse. When the race began, she and Apple were off, both trying their very best.

The girl who beat me by mere seconds in the five finger fillet was here too, haunting me. Reminding me of my second place. Reminding me of the bastard who felt the need to announce to everyone in the room that my brother was murdered, as if we all didn't watch Julian Le Roux cut his life short on television. Sure, Cleome and I had an unofficial rematch after. But, that wasn't public. This was. A public arena for me to beat her.

Part of me wondered if she signed up for this event because she somehow found out that I did. I doubted it, but it was possible. Maybe she wanted to beat me in front of everyone twice. Or maybe it was all a big coincidence. Regardless of the reasons, I couldn't focus on her. I needed to get my head in the game. If I was distracted, so would my horse.

The O'Malleys don't own any horses, but a couple of my friends do and I used to go riding with them. One of the most important things I remembered is you need to feel the emotions you want the horse to feel. If you're frustrated, they get on edge and frustrated. I needed to be focused.

As soon as it was time to go, I hoped that the little riding experience I did have would suffice, especially against the ranchers here in ten. And while I was aiming to win, publicly beating Cleome wouldn't be a bad consolation prize. My mistake in five finger fillet was I underestimated her. Now? I wouldn't underestimate anyone. Especially since I was less confident in my abilities in this event.

It had started off as an opportunity for business. Expansion and the search of inter-district secrets to sell like stolen candy back home. So far, there’d been little more success than a few stolen puppies to follow up. I suppose there’s only so much that hiding in the crowds and straining your ears can earn you.

Sometimes, you have to dig deeper. Hide in plain sight. Get your hands dirty.

I just didn’t think it would have such a literal meaning to it.

I want it on the record: I have never ridden a horse, have never planned on riding a horse and will never ride a horse again. But it’s one of the bigger events taking place at the Fair, which means more people. Which means more secrets. Which means more business.

There’s a domino effect to everything in this life, each decision leading directly to another, headed down a path we can only try to envision a finish line for.

I can’t even see the finish line for this horse race as I nervously approach one of the Ranch horses that Mr Halfinger had ushered me towards.

But hey, I’ve done crazier things. So I attempt to mount the horse, hoisting myself onto its back with the limited strength in my arms, trying desperately to keep my sights set on my plan --

Before the race even began, staring the horse down that you had just met seconds prior, you wonder how you screwed something up this poorly.

Apparently, reading wasn't your strong suit when you signed up for an equestrian event thinking it was a relay race. Now, you're gearing up to not only ride a horse for the first time in your life, you were about to race against some of the most experienced equestrians in Panem.

And worst of all, you could feel the cold eyes of Prop O'Malley staring you down, reeling into your skin with some sort of negative energy that you had never experienced before. You thought to the announcer who, in poor taste, taunted him about his dead brother, and understood why. You pitied him, yet you avoided crossing paths with him out of the fear of an awkward situation. It was bad enough you were going to have to face him at school back in your home district.

You mount the horse and say a little prayer to yourself. Don't let the Hayes curse getcha. You only have limited time on this Earth - let's not cut that even shorter.

What on earth had she been thinking?

Clio Burke had never ridden a horse in her life, and yet here she was, hands pushing against her bottom as they posted her onto an animal that huffed and tossed it head with an eagerness that made her stomach twist. One her sugar high she had dragged that poor boy from ten to the signup station (it hadn't helped that he had been super cute), strongly encouraging him to sign up for a relay with her before seeing the picture of the horse and scribbling down her name so fast.

But the sugar high had ended, and she licked her lips nervously as they directed her towards the start point, "um, hi, yeah excuse me but how do I- how do you make it go?" The person guiding her horse- they said her name was Belle- looked at her with confusion.

"Give her a squeeze with your legs."

"Right. Right.

What about slow down?"

"Have you not ridden a horse before?" He asks, frowning.

"Well you see, no."

"Fuck," he curses, before he tugs Belle towards the start line. "Well whatever you do, just hold on tight, try not to fall off. I'm sure you will be fine," he adds with a shrug, giving Belle a pat on the neck.

Hold on.

Sure, she could do that.
