I wasn't planning on going to the bonfire really. But, Lorenzo said he was going to be there and we both wanted to catch up a bit. Yani was doing something with papa and mama so I took my new puppy with me, though I made sure to carry her so she didn't get stepped on. I still hadn't quite settled on a name, but for now I was nicknaming her Chiquita - little girl in my family's language.
District Ten at night reminded me a lot of home. The ways that the stars shone so brightly in the sky. That's why I considered our districts lucky despite being two of the poorest in the country. Pictures I've seen at other districts at night don't even compare. The upper ones and the Capitol have light pollution drowning out the stars. The other lower ones often have smog or pollution covering them. Us? We have nothing but pure, unfiltered beauty.
As I approached the bonfire, the first thing I noticed was the smell of the campfire. That, was a good thing for two reasons. The first reason was it drowned out the smell of livestock that seemed to permeate District Ten. If I never had to smell livestock again I'd be a very happy woman. The second was the nostalgia of a camp fire or bonfire. Maybe our two districts weren't too different, and this was proof of it.
When I saw Lorenzo, my face lit up. I went over to him, trying to figure out why I was so excited to see him. I sat next to him, letting Chiquita sit on my lap. The small dog snuggled into my sweater, probably a little cold. I wondered if there was anywhere back home that sold dog clothes? Or maybe I could commission someone to make some? At least until she got bigger, golden retrievers weren't tiny puppies forever.
"Nice to see you again, Lorenzo. Thank you again for Chiquita, I really like her. So, Lorenzo, why are you out at the bonfire when you live here? And don't you travel a lot? It's not like you need to be here to meet people from other districts."
