Having scientists as parents is kinda cool but it can also be really annoying. Like whenever I have a question, they never give me an answer. If I ask them questions, they ask why I don't just find out on my own. I always tell them that I'm twelve and can't just go find answers. It's always, "you're never too young to learn". And one way for me to learn would be for them to just tell me.

The first time they told me to go find an answer myself was when I think I was ten. I was outside swinging on this wooden swing we have connected to a tree outside the house. As I was swinging up, I was looking up at the sky. And I started wondering what was up there. So, after I was done swinging when I went inside for lunch I asked.

"Hey mom, dad, what's out there?"

"Right outside the window, Cat?"

"No like out there out there?"

"Beyond the fence?"

"Beyond the clouds."

"Hmm... why don't you go find out yourself, Catalina? That's what scientists do after all. They have a question so they go find the answer."

At first it was frustrating. How was a ten year old supposed to find out what was in space? They don't let little kids go to space! But, I was doing some snooping (I'm quiet so I'm real good at snooping) and found some space books in my parents room. Some of it was too hard to read, but the pictures helped. After that, I started really liking space. I hope to see it in person someday.

As I said, my parents are scientists. A lot of people around here are. But, I don't know what kind of scientists they are or what they do. Whenever I ask them, they say that it's a secret and that they'll tell me when I'm older. So every year on my birthday I ask them what kind of science they do. I thought maybe this year they'd tell me because I'm twelve. But when I went to their room to ask, they were just crying for some reason and I didn't want to interrupt.

I think they were crying because I'm old enough to be reaped. But, I'm not too worried about it. I'm only twelve and older kids are more likely to get picked! Besides Flynn Garner was only a year older than me and he won. Why wouldn't I be able to too? That's my parents for ya, they just worry a lot. Sometimes late at night I'll be sneaking around the house and I can hear them whispering. I can never hear what they're saying but they sound worried.

And sometimes my parents will disappear for a few days at a time "for work". It makes me really curious what they're doing, but I kinda like those days because Nana comes over and takes care of me! And I love it when Nana comes to visit! We always bake cookies together and she reads me stories! My parents haven't read me stories since I was a little kid, so I like it when Nana does it!

I have a plan for figuring out what my parents keep trying to hide from me, it's just going to be hard to do. Whenever they aren't home and I'm at school, Nana is over. But, I have an idea even if it's going to take a while to be able to do. If my parents want me to use science to answer questions, I'll use science. I have one of those fancy "Composition" notebooks like mom and dad use and everything.

The first step of the scientific method is to ask a question. In this case my question is, "What are mom and dad hiding/what do they do for work?" My hypothesis was hard to come up with. So for now it's "If my parents are hiding what they're doing for work, then it must be something super cool and top secret!" I'm not sure how sciencey it is, but hey, I'm twelve cut me some slack! Next is an experiment. For this I'm planning to skip school without telling anyone and then go into their study/work-space they always keep locked up. As for the rest? I'll see when I get there. I just hope mom and dad don't get too mad to me for snooping.
