We got our asses beat.

Now don’t get me wrong, we put up one hell of a fight.

But I couldn’t stand there and say that we were walking out of there with anything impressive, other than maybe a few scars (are scars still cool?).

Thankfully I hadn’t gotten anything sliced off, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t wheezing from the ribs that had been cracked in two places. That kid from eight kept smashing me like she thought I was a piñata, and I’d just stood there and took it (yeah, I should be used to that already).

Hopefully the other kids at least saw the kind of fight we’d bring to them if they weren’t careful. Cor and Alpha of course had done most of the heavy lifting. I mean, Alpha had cut off someone’s fucking head.

Like.

Shit.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get the sight of someone’s actual fucking head separating from their body and blood squirting out everywhere. Like – it’s a good thing most of us are going to be dead soon because I don’t think I’m ever going to unsee what the fuck just happened. It’s a good thing my ribs hurt like a bitch or else I might close my eyes and still see that.

When the crowd had thinned out and six and – who was the other one? Hard to keep track at this point? Anyway, the two kids that had gone after me, front and back, double teamed so suddenly that’d made me want to scream ‘I don’t do threeways!’

At least not sandwiched in the middle.

I’d cut and run out the door, hightailing it along with Cor and Alpha, wondering where the hell Kassia had gone. I’d been trying to balance one foot in front of the other while not tripping on my robes when Cor said the only other person that didn’t seem whack was gonezo.

“I’m sorry, what?” I knelt alongside the window with them, eyes wide as though there hadn’t been another cannon just a minute later to signal another body had hit the ground. “Dead? She was just behind me! Damn.”

When another crash sounded, pots and pans scattering or some shit, I threw myself back against the side of the tavern. Which was idiotic considering my ribs were already pressing against my lungs. I slid down into a sitting position.

“Uh, you think we might not want to get the hell out of here?” It came out a little bit shorter than I wanted, but I thought it might be important to impress upon queen career that we didn’t stand a chance if the kids who hadn’t been stabbed in six different places pounced. “Y'all look like shit and I feel like I can barely walk. Let’s at least hobble our asses somewhere we can hide a bit.”
