The Cornucopia has fangs, twenty-three teeth, and he'd felt two slide into skin on the way out of its mouth.
And what a funny feeling, cold and molten all at once.
The tavern behind them looks so sweet, puffing fat clouds of smoke into the gray sky. And it's like a storybook, stone and wood in the twists of ivy, spilling wildflowers from the cracks.
He was almost unafraid because he had never felt it like this, licked by a blade. It had struck him, and for a moment, there was nothing, no feeling but the breath being sucked from his lungs. He barely feels fear even now because maybe it doesn't feel so bad.
He turns back around and something trickles down his back, wet, weeping.
Maybe it does.
Pain looks like a moth, floating, there and not there. It flaps its wings and leaves a yellow smudge, beating its wings in his ears. Charlie grows smaller and smaller ahead of him, flickering on and off, and something inside of him does the same thing, on and off, on and off until it doesn't come back on.
"Wait–"
Hand pressed to his chest, the lights go off for a moment,
A breath, and suddenly Lux is there again, standing between two opalescent wings, her edges glowing. Another breath, and his lungs feel soaked in chlorine.
The air smells like copper. The bag comes off his shoulder, and the air feels very raw where it was. He looks down, and it's drenched in shades of a warning.
There is only instinct when he reaches, and the muscles stretch, yawning and pulling, filling and spilling from a rift. There's fabric, there's something like a ridge of a mountain, and then there's a sharp ache when his fingers slip into the gash.
He feels his jaw clench. It makes a weird clicking sound, and something must be broken there too.
It tastes of pennies when he speaks, and he wipes his mouth on his sleeve, another streak of red left on his shirt. He looks at it for a moment, then he looks up, eyes meeting with Lux. "I think I might need to sit down." And there's nothing really funny at all, but he laughs, holding the saber up weakly, shaking underneath the weight before he feels himself tilt forwards. "Got the sword though."
