ALICE
ballinger.
So thirsty, she's so thirsty. She aches everywhere, a hundred places across the plane of her body tender and hurting. It's everywhere, but more than anything, it's her heart that aches.
Her broken heart is what she thinks is going to kill her.
The mountains are too daunting; she and December scavenge around the area for what they can find, but there's not much. She cries a little bit more, just stray tears slipping down her cheeks when she asks him for help with the little needle and thread she finds.
"My hands are shaking too much," she says, voice wobbly, gesturing to the wound on her right ribcage that is still oozing blood. "Please, I need help." The sight of it when she lifts up her shirt and exposes her belly to her new friend is enough to make her woozy all over again, and she has to put her hand on his shoulder to steady herself before giving up and laying down.
It's so much worse here than she could've ever imagined.
"Water," she manages out when he finishes and she realizes that she thinks they have gone too far into the mountain for her liking. Her hands twist together, and she looks up at the horrible, daunting, jagged face of the thing and knows beyond a doubt—if she goes up there, she is going to die. She's sure of it. "I need water."
It makes her feel guilty for a hot flash, something searing and cruel in the back of her head making her feel undone for having asked to go in another direction, but she doesn't take it back. Alice searches Decembers face, eyes wide and terrified that he will tell her no, he's going up this mountain and he's going to find himself a sword. And he's going to kill her with it. And she's going to be alone. He doesn't say the words, but they are still loud in her brain, razor sharp alongside the voice of Peter in her head.
You're replaceable.
But when she turns and starts walking back in the direction from which they came, December follows, and she tries not to let it make her cry again. She's had enough of the tears.
