You have to be gentle with rare blooms. The orchids his family sought out were delicate things- they needed peat and sand and water, and if you dared to move one they often shriveled and died before they even made it back to the nursery.

But behind every beautiful bloom there's a secret. A sturdiness, a strength, a hunger; orchids make great companions for carnivorous plants. They even enjoy their company where other plants shy away.

December so desperately wanted to be the pitcher plant, the sundew- he'd even be the horribly, disgustingly named bladderwort if it meant he could be the killer and not the companion. But as he stitched himself back together a few unsteady steps behind Brody and Alice with Quinn's blood spattered across his face, sword dragging through the moss when he stumbled, head spinning, hands shaking—"I th-think, uh, I have to r-rest."—lips stuttering.

Was there an honor to this? Being the dying, transplanted orchid amongst carnivores?

"Just for a minute."

He didn't think so.

You bury an axe in Quinn's neck, and you try to feel worse about it than you do.

"Weak link," you sputter out, near dead (again, again, again), arm wrapped limply around the much taller frame of Brody. "She was the weak link, right?"

It's a question, but you already know the answer, already know that's not why you chose her over the other two she'd been traveling with. Her bag is looped over Brody's shoulder, loose; it keeps smacking into your back as you stumble forward, clutching onto your ally for balance. You didn't pick Quinn because she was the weakest.

Eyes locked on December spine, you did it for him. You killed her for him.

He's almost as weak as you were on that first day, when you'd fallen face first into Niles body and the pair of you had found his last pills and washed them down with goodberry wine. Soot had been caked under your nails from the place where you left your friends bodies, had washed away red from their blood left on your hands. There's nowhere to clean them now, and his hands are as slick with Quinn's blood as yours are. It makes you quiet, haggard breathing the only thing that escapes your lungs.

A part of you feels like crying, but no tears escape, and when December asks for a rest, you fall right to your knees. It was a sort of sad sickness, nestled in the pit of your belly. The kind of sick that makes your stomach churn, but still nothing there either.

So you sit, and you let it eat you alive.

You don't want to make anything worse.

She was the weakest link, right?

Brody cocks his head to the side as Alice inquires, like she’s looking for approval. She wants to be told what she did was okay. That killing Quinn was the right thing to do. If you asked him, it was. There’s no room for indecision when one’s life is on the line. Derecho and Kaius had no intention of letting anyone walk away from that fight.

They would have killed Alice if given the chance, in the blink of an eye or the inhale of a breath, she could have been wiped away. Like water to ink-stained paper, bleeding through and becoming something it was never meant to be.

“Yes,” he reassures her, squeezing her hand in his as he hoists her arm over his shoulder. “You did good.” Brody really does means that, too. As shocked as he is to have said it, he’s even more stunned that he actually means it.

He tries not to focus on all the wounds she’s sustained, blood staining almost every inch of her clothes. She looks like death warmed over, like one more knock on the door would do it. One this is for sure, though. Alice definitely knows how to take care of herself.

Maybe Brody has underestimated her from the beginning. He’d pegged her a lamb, a soft and tender little bird. One that would be easily manipulated and served up in this arena on a silver platter.

Perhaps, he’d been wrong all along.

“Let’s get you cleaned up, yeah? You’ve looked better,” he says to her with a wink. And for the first time since they’d all arrived in this place, Brody is glad it is Alice who is by his side.
