You left in Autumn
The leaves were turning
I walked down roads of orange and gold.
I saw your sweet smile
I heard your laughter
You're still here beside me every day.
The leaves were turning
I walked down roads of orange and gold.
I saw your sweet smile
I heard your laughter
You're still here beside me every day.
~Naida~
A few days had come and gone since she had gone to see Alba's final resting place with Dillon. It had been an interesting day to say the least. She'd been so broken down at first, but somehow, with a little push from Raiden, and being able to confide in Dillon, she had managed to pull it somewhat together by the end of the visit. That day had given her reason to try and change one more time, one more time, Naida had decided that she would try to build herself up again with what was left. If not for herself but for her family, and Raiden... Who had made it clear to her that he was stilling watching over her, but now it was as a Guardian Angle.
Sunlight filtered in through the window of Naida and Ilayda's modest room, it was morning. Rolling out of bed Naida smiled at her eight year old sister sleeping peacefully with a seagull plushy in her arms. How adorable. Naida had been that sweet and carefree once upon a time, oh how things have changed. Not that Ilayda was completely carefree, Raiden's death, and Naida's insanity had burdened her with issues no one her age should have to deal with. Naida riffled through her draws and pulled out her clothes for the day, before changing into them. Her pale sea colored eyes looked at her reflection in the small mirror. She was skinnier, and paler than she had been. But the most disturbing thing she saw in her image was the slight wild or mad look in her eyes, reminding her that one didn't solve all their problems in such a short period of time. She was still fragile, things would take time. Sighing softly, she could only hope that people had the patience to wait for her.
"Morning Naida dear." Her poor mother smiled gently at her eldest daughter.
Only giving her a quick glance Naida murmured, "Morning mama." Before continuing on her way out the door, with a seaweed woven basket, who's contents was covered by a simple blue cloth. By now her mom knew better than to question her or try to stop her. Naida needed to do whatever she could to cling to any possible means of relief or comfort. Stepping out of the door, her feet scampered down the porch steps and onto the gravel of the road. She'd gotten it in her mind that she was going to go spend some quality time with her siblings today. First she'd spend time with Raiden, light his candle, and have a picnic with him, and then she'd take the little ones to the beach they all used to go to together. It would be nice to show Ilayda and Raviv the beautiful place that they'd all spent hours upon hours at as young children, but hadn't been to since Raiden's murder. Murder... Her mind repeated the word to her. He wasn't just killed, his death was murder, just like all the other children in the games.
She looked a little better today, but she little had a slight tremor running through her thinned body, eyes still wild, and certain mentions of things could probably still break her small amount of confidence she had just managed to get back after all this time. The people on the streets looked at her as she walked, some whispered, others shook their heads, and a select few asked her if she was alright, or how her family was hanging in there. Everyone had loved Raiden...Her brother had been so charismatic and charming, it was near impossible to dislike him She was feisty and blunt, or was, until she became so withdrawn. Either way, it wasn't the best way to make loads of friends. But when she'd had Raiden, and the little ones, she never worried about friends, they were all she would ever need. Who would have guessed how that could all come crashing down so fast. The day of the wake, soon followed by the funeral, was when it all slammed into her face at once.
Start flashback...
Raiden's body had been repaired, he was dressed beautifully, his blood replaced with preservative. Where he was now, he wouldn't need blood. Where he was now, not a another drop of the crimson liquid would be spilled. A small comfort came to her, in the fact that he still had that slight smile on his face, even after death.
Naida walked up to his open casket to see her poor brother again. Laying a kiss to his lips, she realized how cold he was, he was really dead. There was no response, no warmth, no comforting words, he was gone now... She could hear her family, among other, crying for Raiden, talking of his wonderful but short life, and untimely tragic death.
But she was numb, in so much pain, she couldn't even feel it anymore. As they were seated, listening to people's respects for him, Naida was in her own world. Her mind replying every wonderful moment they'd had together, and how that was gone, stolen from her by the Capitol, and the hate she felt for them burned so deep, she wanted to see it destroyed, wiped off the face of the earth, but for the sake of her family's safety, she would sit by, silently suffering.
Burying Raiden up on that hilltop was equally horrid. Putting her beloved Raiden in the dirt, it seemed so wrong. And on his headstone, the date of birth, and date of death, were so close together, too close together, someone so young shouldn't be dead.
People started to leave the grave late that night, but the Gardez family stayed a while longer. Naida curled up at the base of his headstone, among the many flowers, and sea salt, a District four tradition.
Never in her life had Naida felt so alone.
End flashback...
Naida was nearing the cemetery to go see Raiden, the breeze swept all around her, brought comfort, that her brother was there, he lived through the winds and heavens, and even her. Raiden... His name meant thunder and lighting, storms. Which was probably why she felt him so strongly in the wind and stormy weather. He'd had the strength of a mighty storm, but could be as gentle as a soft breeze. Raiden was always so good with other people's emotions, and was very level-headed. All the qualities Naida wished more people had, maybe then the world wouldn't be so cruel and unforgiving.
"I look forward to your visit, and I'm sure Ily and Rav will be excited to go to the beach, they must miss it,"
"Raiden, I love you. I'm sorry I haven't been taking better care of the little ones, I'm such a failure compared to you..."
"And you know I love you. Really Naida, don't be so hard on yourself. You're not a failure, you're just starting to learn to cope. The kids understand, and they still love and look up to you."
"Thank you Raiden, for everything."
"Anytime kiddo."
And his voice faded off, like it was being swept away by a gale.
The strange conversation Naida had with her brother would concern most people, but she welcomed them, each and every time he spoke to her. Raiden's advice had never lead her astray, and it made reassured her, that some day, a good while down the road, they'd all be together again. The loss will be painful, and long, but not forever. Same going for Alba. She's see her friend again, when her time came. But with the Games, who knew when that could possibly be. There was no telling what would happen to any of them, but she was beginning to able to believe there was some hope for the feature, that just maybe things could work out. But still a shadow of doubt hung over her, she hoped today she might be able to clear some of that up. What she wouldn't give to feel better, what she wouldn't give to be able to enjoy life again.
