"I know you hate the extra work during summer everyone, but just a few weeks more and everything will be back to normal." Lina's supervisor said to the small group of dock registry workers. The scuffles of movement started up again and Lina allowed the scoff she had held back to escape.
Normal. Nothing will ever be normal for me. She thought savagely, feeling her way to her registry desk and leaning lightly against the wood. It creaked slightly against Lina's weight and the corner of her mouth pulled up slightly. She loved that sound. Something splashed against the wooded dock about ten feet away and Lina turned her face towards it, touching the scars on the palm of her hand absently. They were lumpy and rough to the touch, but Lina's mother had assured her that they were not noticeable to the eye.
As her fingers fluttered over the skin, she tried very hard not to think about the night she had gotten them, the night she went from not-quite-normal to completely bizarre. Lina's supervisor had to put another person to work at her desk, just in case Lina had an episode. She still had to be around men everyday but it wasn't easy, she stopped breathing when they came near the desk and often couldn't stop her dead eyes from crying. It freaked people out. She hadn't told her parent what had happened that night, why she'd been so late, or where the cuts and bruises had come from.
Footsteps trailed up to the desk and Lina curled her fingers off the sign-in binder. A girls voice stifled a gasp and then after a failed attempt at speaking, snatched up the pen, scribbled quickly and then dashed away. Lina fought to keep her face controlled. She should be used to this by now, the shock and fear when people saw her eyes. Lina had thought about tinted glasses when she originally lost her sight, but the bridge bothered her nose and the arms did weird things to her hearing. Lina suddenly found herself wondering if there was anything in the capitol to make her eyes look normal.
Normal, there was that word again, slipping into Lina's head like a taunt and poking her heart with a firm finger. It wasn't pain, just discomfort which was somehow worse. The acceptance of freakishness was what killed her, she had given up and she hated herself for it. She would never win The Hunger Games, she would never sail a boat, and now it seemed she would never find someone to be with forever. Lina coughed to hide the catch in her throat and leaned against the desk again, hoping the pleasant squeak would distract her. No such luck, but then something did distract her.
Fear tightened Lina's stomach, so intense that it was almost pain. The heavy footsteps, to thudding and even to be a girls walk had caught Lina off guard and now she could hear breathing, not far away from her desk. She heard the girl working with her at the desk tense, and touch Lina's shoulder gently, trying to comfort her. Lina swallowed the saliva in her mouth, and clasped her hands together to keep them from vibrating. An all to familiar thought raced through her brain before she spoke. Is it him?
"Signing in?" Her voice cracked slightly on the last syllable and she winced. No, she wouldn't ever be normal, but she could pretend she was and hopefully, someone would treat her like she was normal.
