How do I say goodbye to what we had?
The good times that made us laugh
Outweigh the bad.

I thought we'd get to see forever
But forever's gone away
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

What an awful dream. It was so scary and realistic that I needed to tell Jack about it. Feel his arms around me to comfort me and let me know that I didn't have to worry, that the reaping would be fine. That I wouldn't be called and it would all be over soon.

Its almost as if I'm still floating when my eyes open. The dark room filled with motion and I can't remember if I'm at the hospital or why I am where I am. "Jack! JACK!" I call out searching the room for him, but instead of being in my room I'm surrounded by peace keepers and a Capitol representative. Resting on a almost new but still fairly rough couch, my heart shatters as I realize that the dream wasn't a dream after all, that my name really was called and I really am going to the Arena.

The sobs start again and I'm drawing looks from everyone in the room. They just don't understand, they don't care that I'm not the only one dying, my children are going to die too. They don't understand that I spent my last night with Jack angry and sleeping huddled by some random person's porch. That I had nothing to bring with me, no token to show that I mean anything to anyone, that I'd have no one who'd cared if I died.

I know Jack was there and saw the horror play out, but after yesterday does he even care? Does he even still want to marry me? Wrapping my arms around myself I squeeze as if to push all the air from my lungs. My parents won't be here, they would rather I be dead already, and from what I understand the other tribute is the brother of Mace Emberstatt. VICTOR. So all I have are my children to keep my company on my trip to the Capitol.

Someone asks me if I'm ready to stand and I shake my head just needed a few moments more. I hope they do it fast. Not draw it out like some of the more crazy Careers. I hope that they don't go for my stomach, like a sick twisted bastard. I hope that I die before making it in. That maybe some how when I go to sleep on the train that I never wake up. That they loose their District 10 Female Tribute. Yet I know it won't happen. I'm not that damn lucky.

Finally I raise my head and look up at a peace keeper who ushers me into a room. Its small but private and there's a desk and a few chair, lots of books that give the room a musty worn smell. Fidgeting I take a seat, my eyes darting around the room trying to figure out what I'm going to do, who would even want to come see me, when I hear foot steps and the door clicks open.

"Four minutes. That's it." a deep gruff voice says to the shadows outside the door. My heart starts racing again as I can't figure out who would even care to visit. When I see the hand at the door my heart skips a beat. Its Jack's mother and father, who have become my family as well. If only they knew just how much they have meant to me. Flying into his mothers arms I start sobbing.

"I'm so sorry! I'm so sorry! Don't hate me! I didn't want this! I didn't do anything! Just don't let Jack hate me. Don't let him blame himself. Don't let him hate me!" I blubber. My sobs are raking through me and I can't breathe. I know I'm weak and breaking down, but right now I don't care.

If we get to see tomorrow
I hope it's worth all the wait
It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

So many things whirl around in my head that I want to tell Noreen it makes my physically dizzy.
After being searched for weapons we stand in a long hallway with pictures of previous victors on the walls. Only one has been from our district lately…a guy…ruthless and brutal.I wish so much that Noreens picture will be the next one up on the wall but I know exactly what the odds are.
Silently we stand there and wait our turn. Devrouxs presence outside the building gives me a tiny bit of comfort.

“Four minutes. That’s it.” An older peace keeper tells us. Four minutes…that’s nothing. How do I say everything I want in four minutes? Why not 10 or 15?

As we agreed upon before my parents go in first. At least the terrible wait won’t be very long. While I stand with my gaze fixed to the opposite wall they old guard walks away but is soon replaced by a younger female one….maybe I could overpower her…

My mother and father enter the room and find Noreen, pale and in tears. My mother instantly encloses her into her arms and holds ´her tight. “Shhh, Noreen. Don’t cry.”
Noreens rambling catches them a little off guard. “No…why would we hate you? And Jack does not hate you either. He’s waiting outside. Of course you didn’t want this. Stop, Noreen, stop. “

She squeezes her tight and kisses her on top of her head. “Listen, my beautiful girl. You are like a daughter to me. I love you and whatever happens, I will always love you.”
Now it’s getting too much for her. She had to do this when her own son got reaped and died not too much later by the hand of another tribute. Seeing her surrogate daughter in the same position simply overwhelms her and suddenly she breaks down crying as well.
“Why are they doing this to us. Why can they bring so much sorrow and pain to one family.” It seemed like the capitol always found new ways to tear their family to shreds.

Out of the blue my father, who is always calm and collected steps forward and puts his hand on his wife’s shoulder. “Get a grip on yourself and save the crying for later. This is doing nobody any good.”
Gently he pushes her away and places his wrinkly old fingers on Noreens much softer skin. “Listen, don’t give up…the games have seen the unlikeliest victors ever now and then. You will be one of them. Come back to us.” He places the first and probably last kiss on her forehead.
His lips are trembling and he’s fighting the tears but he manages when he looks Noreen in the eyes. “You ‘ve survived under bad circumstances. You’re tough. I believe in you.”

Both of them reach out to hold hands with Noreen before a guard cuts them off by announcing that the four minutes are up.

Silently they stand up but don’t take their eyes of the pregnant girl in front of them. Until the last moment they keep mouthing sweet words to her before the door closes behind them and silence falls.

His mothers arms envelop me in her love and she holds me tight whispering all the sweet things I need to hear, but the fact that Jack is outside waiting sends shivers down my spin. I don't know how to even begin to say the things I need to say. I don't know how I'll ever be able to let him go, to ever accept that I won't spend the rest of my life waking up in his arms. That my last few days will be spent alone and in fear.

She's stroking my hair and comforting me and I just say, "I love you too, you've been more of a mother and confidant than my mother ever was." I choke back a sob knowing that my parents don't even just care enough to see me off. All I have left are the Lexingtons and I'm going to die before I can become one.

His father steps up to me next knowing that Jack's mother can't handle much more of this, but his next actions take me by surprise. The gentle kiss on my forehead and the soft and gentle words of encouragement break me down into a deeper pile of depression. "I haven't given up. I have to stay strong, I have to take care of them, they matter more than me." I wrap my arms around him and hold him close for a moment, wishing I could've have spent more time with him. Wishing that Jack would have the chance to turn into as wonderful of father as he is.

Moving in to hold them close again I see the peace keeper come to usher them out, "I Love you! Don't Forget me! I love you!" I scream as they take them out of the room. My knees go weak again and I sink into a chair holding myself tight, rocking slightly.

I can't do this. I can't say good by to him. I can't. I won't. I just. I... the flood of thoughts overwhelm me and before I can even begin to start to sort them out I hear the shuffling of feat and the voice says again "Four Minutes." his eyes travel to both of us and something inside of me says he may not be as to the second as he was before, but that doesn't mean extra time.

I'm in Jack's arms before the door closes and I'm begging him to forgive me. "I didn't do anything with Scutcher, don't hate me! Please please forgive me Jack. I love you. I love you more than anything, please just don't forget me. Don't hate me. Please. I love you!" My whole body is shaking as I just pray he'll understand that I never meant to hurt him. I just want our last moments to be worth while. I press my lips to his, the soaking tears on my cheeks and his now mingling together.

This can't be the end, this can't be it. We're supposed to have a family and a life and live to be old and grey.... not this. This can't be my life I refuse to accept it. I'm not here anymore I'm in the meadow behind the Andersons in Jacks arms.

"I'm so scared Jack."

As much as I want to go and see her, those few steps into the room feel like I’m climbing a mountain. I dread seeing her just as much as I long for it.
Then my eyes fall on her face. Even in tears she’s stunning. I love her so much.
In a second I’m in her arms holding her as tight as I possibly can. Feelings of sadness, pain, fear choke me up and bring tears to me eyes. I can barely breath and am far from speaking.
Only her begging enables me to say what I need to.
“I was such a fool, I’m so sorry for letting you walk away and for my words.” Taking a deep breath I clear my choked up voice, which keeps cracking at every word I say.
“Listen, Nonnie. I love you more than words can say. I will never forget you and I’m just so unspeakably sorry.” I swallow again and again, my eyes filled to the brim with salty drops, that threaten to spill.
“Listen closely, Noreen. I wanted to marry you for a while but you told me to wait until after the reaping. I can’t wait anymore. Nonnie, I love you so much. Marry me now, please.”
With shaky hands I pull a small, uneven handmade golden ring from my own pinky, which belonged to me grandfather.
“Will you?”
Suddenly I can speak and breath and even smile when I see the look on her face.
As she holds out her hand I gently slide the ring on her left ring finger and look into her eyes. “Forever, Mrs. Lexington.”
Her eyes are so filled with sorrow and pain but I can clearly see the happiness somewhere deep inside and maybe a hint of hope.
My lips find hers and I take a nice, long moment to give her the kiss she can remember me by.

Then I turn and holler for the peace keeper at the door. “Would you come in for a moment?”
The guy is obviously irritated but walks in none theless.
“You’re a government official, aren’t you?”
“Yes, he says with knitted brow and a look at his watch.”
“Marry us, now, please.”
Of course he objects but as we plead with him he shows something you could call pity of our situation and nods. “I can act as witness.”
He then leaves telling us. “Two more minutes…no matter if your pregnant, married or flying into space. Two!”

He then leaves us and as I turn to Noreen I’m speechless for a second. But then a whole new emotion overcomes me, so I take her hand again. “Listen closely now. I’m planning to spend my life with you so you act clever. Find strong allies, run from the cornucopia as fast as you can and hide far, far away. Evade every fight but kill if you have to. You owe it to our children. You WILL come back to me, understood!” I desperate now, almost shouting at her.
In one swift motion I kiss her again and then slide down to her belly, placing both hands on her stomach where I can immediately feel a babies foot. That little motion makes me loose my self control and as much as I promised myself to stay strong for Noreen I’m falling apart now. I start sobbing like a little boy into the fabric of her dress. “I just wanted to get to know them. I just wanted to hold them one time, kiss them one time.” Tears are falling so rapidly I can’t see anything anymore and before I know it my times up.

My hands keep holding Noreens as if MY life depended on it and in a way I think it does but merciless hands drag me away from her.
Backwards I get pulled out of the room, kicking and screaming at the person behind me.
My eyes fall on the love of my life one last time before the heavy oak door closes.

Last Night I had a crazy dream
Wish was granted just for me,

As he holds me and starts letting the words fall out I realize what he's doing and I hold out my hand and let him slide the ring on my finger. The worn and beautifully imperfect gold ring means I won't die a Lyvers, I will be a Lexington for the rest of my life. Even through my fear I smile and lose myself in his embrace. This is what I wanted, even if this is not how I wanted to get it.

"I love you Jack. I love you more than everything." There isn't much I can say now because the tears have turned into a mess of sobs and I am just trying to keep myself together enough to stay on my feet.

The whole family...my whole family...believes in me, but they don't understand I know I have no shot. I'm a pregnant wrangler from D10. I'm going to be sent in there with a target on my front and back, its not like I won't be easy prey. I can't run, I can't fight, all I can do is pray that someone has mercy on me and does it quickly.

My nails bite into his skin through his shirt as I clutch him closer to me. I want to push us into one. The four of us becoming a single entity that can slip out the door when they pull him from me, but it doesn't happen. I'm still me, I'm still separate from him, and as my grip loosens Jack crumbles, his tall strong form sinking to the floor talking to his children. Whispering words that I know he'll never get to tell them.

I want to die now, here, give them a chance to rush someone in and cut them from me so that they can be with him, but fate isn't so kind. "You will know them Jack, in your heart, they're yours. Always. Always we all are." I clutch him closer to me and hold him rocking with a small shhhh sound. I don't know why comforting him feels more important than comforting myself, but it does.

Jack is going to have to keep living, even if I don't, and I don't want him to be broken forever. The loss of his brothers and now me..and his children...its going to crush him. I'm going to be at fault for this if I don't fight, but fighting for what? The chance to come back here and be with him, but living with the guilt that I took someone else's life? I just don't know how to figure out what I'm going to do.

As I'm trying to soothe him I see the door open and I bend down cupping his face in my hands "I love you more than life itself Jack. Forever. I'm yours." Pressing my lips to his I kiss him like I will never feel another pair of lips against mine. Suddenly his body is being pried away from mine and I keep shouting over and over "I love you! I love you!" rushing towards him till the door is slammed in my face.

First thing I'd do is pray for time to crawl
I'd unplug the telephone, and keep the TV off
I'd hold you every second, say a million I Love You's
Thats what I'd do, with one more day with you

The world seems to slow down, the sight of him being pulled out of the room replays over and over in my head as my body crashes to the floor again in earth shattering sobs. I can't breathe, I can't move, I'm melting into the floor of this wretched building. I'm not anything anymore, just a wet flood of emotions.

I can't even open my eyes as the peace keepers and escorts come in to help me to the train. My eyes so swollen and red, barely make out the last few glances of District 10 as they help me up the train steps and the door whizzes shut behind me.

This is it, this is all I have left. I'm never coming back, never going to see this again and I can't even focus. All I want is to evaporate into nothingness, but instead of that I'm going to be primped and primed into a beautiful lamb for slaughter. Be made into some sort of freak show for people to stare at. I'll be nothing more than a distant memory for the people here in District 10.

The train is lurching forward and after several moments my sobs subside. Pushing my hands into my eyes I swallow my fears and put on the mask of the old Nonnie, the one before Jack, the one that didn't care about anything, and head forward into the dining car where Elon and Mace have already started eating.
