like his occupation suggests, leland stanford (mr stanford to anyone who doesn't want to tempt his sadist tendencies) craves power and control. after moving to the capitol from a place in the wilderness he never talks about, he bought a large plot of land there, even though he was warned the place was cursed by the tribe that lived there before the dark days, who were all murdered and buried there by an opposing group of people. although superstitious, mr stanford chooses the fantasies he indulges, and had no time for rumours of ghosts. what stanford fears is the devil, the master of souls, and the studio head performs cult-like rituals with all of his employees to appease what he believes are their overlords. his actors and studio staff go along with his delusions, out of a combination of fear and lust for the man, as well as to take advantage of the abundance of alcohol and drugs which pass through the studio's most secret tunnels and are always found at these rituals.

when inertia was sent to the beaucroix reformatory for wayward young ladies, it was partially for her own protection from her torturous cousins and partially because her aunt and uncle had run out of patience for inertia's obsession with spirits and tarot. there she found many other girls exactly like her, who thought they had some connection to the world beyond, or could affect the people around them in paranormal ways. however, inertia always preferred to keep herself to herself. after she was reaped for the 73rd hunger games, and then saved in an act of divine intervention by renée perdris, inertia's infatuation with witchcraft began to border on insane.

as an acrobat, rory has no problem being tumbled and turned around as part of her routines. however, the way that she has been similarly passed from family to family, first being left by her birth parents on the stage door-step of the tanami theatre where she was raised, and then being officially adopted by the morenos, only leaves her feeling lost, never anchored down by the sense of community she craves. unlike her adopted siblings, rory has no desire for violence or victory. instead she prefers to associate herself with calm, creative types, and loves to share her hopes and dreams with them.

bone has always been followed by death, and has come to the point where he embraces it like a lover. after witnessing the murder of his father, and causing the death of the culprit - his brother - in revenge, he fled his home and took up a new life as a taxidermist. he found the small stuffed creatures that people never came back to collect were almost like totems which reminded him of the inevitability, but beauty, of death. it was at his shop that he first met altair melnont, who invited him to become partners in forming an illegal child fighting ring to train orphans (or "orphans", snatched from whole families) to one day win the games. bone is in charge of discipline and rightly so; however in order to keep up his cold and cruel facade, he has always had to hide the truth that he's in love with altair, his commander.
