Void of dreams for one night only. A clear conscious for the first time in two weeks. That's the gift I was given after the amount of liquior that seemed to flow through my body; numbing my senses. Tonight though? It's all come back. I know that in just a few short hours, we'll be packing up to head back home. The horrible truth of it all is that it's probably just after two in the morning, based on all the previous days. It's always two o'clock. I'm not sure what that number has to do with what time I wake up, soaked in sweat and gasping for breath from nightmares. Each nightmare is different, but it always ends in death. Someone always dies, but not before I'm being made to watch the death occur each time. Tonight, it was three of them. Tonight, I woke without breath as I watched that sadistic maniac end the lives of three people.
As I shot up in bed with a small gasp, it only made the child shift in her sleep. Gala barely stirred but Vy seems to have noticed what happened. Her eyes peer open and in the darkness, I see the gaze directed to me. She blinks several times, warding off the effects of drowsiness since I've caused her to wake from her slumber.
"Evertying okay?" She questions me with a great yawn, I give her a solemn nod. I never look at her, but a moment later, I'm scrambling to get out of the restraining sleeping bag. It feel horrible on my skin. It feel so much like being claustrophobic, almost like I'm being held down against my will. That's what I always see. Being held against my will. Trapped. Forced to stay when all I want to do is run. Help me, someone. Please make these nightmares go away. I scream out in my head as I take nothing with me, but edge out slowly through the tent. I only pause briefly because Vy did ask me a question. It would be rude not to answer, but I don't knwo what to say. I can't tell her it's a nightmare brought on by someone whose locked away. She'll laugh at me and these ridiculous nightmares. If only someone understood them. Do they? Do they experience similar nightmares from that night?
"Gotta pee. Be back soon." I whisper out and Gala's breath becomes heavy for a moment then evens out and I'm gone before Vy can even say another word to me. The tent is zipped back up, protecting the three inside the tent from hearing my heavy breathing or see my shaking fingers. I turn from the tent and start walking by the bright moon that's full tonight. Thank God that I'm allowed this amount of freedom. Everyone is sleeping, so once again, I find myself fully awake sometime after two in the morning. The campfire is slowly dying, only giving a small amount of warm ember coals while I press out in the chilly nighttime temperature. It's hardly summertime yet, so it makes me regret just running off.
The lake comes into view not far from the campsite and that is my sole destination. Using the light that the enormous moon tonight, I find myself near to the water already and a few more steps, I find myself completely out of breath. I move outward to the water and take my shoes off just to allow myself to become tranquil as the water is that is reflecting the white rays of nighttime.
Without notice, I storm out to the water, letting the cold water make my feet take the icy liquid. There's a moment that I actually want to have every answer in my book, but since I don't, I take a quick, swift kick against the water's surface.
