s c o t c h v o c a t u s m a l e | 4 1 a n i j a y Master brewer and head of the Tottering Tankard for nearly ten years, Scotch Vocatus does most of the work producing the alcohol the Capitol orders from him. He is also responsible for training new brewers and searching for the next owner. Quite the perfectionist, he hates releasing a drink until he is 100% satisfied-- which is rarely ever. Loud and proud are the best words to describe this family man. He loves his wife, Merlot, and has been a patient and loving father to his four children. Although he loves his drinks (they help him forget the abuse of his formative years), he won't put up a fight when his wife puts the bottle away for the night. He's exceedingly passive. A softy through and through. Growing up, Scotch constantly lived in his older brother, Beer's shadow, even if that shadow didn't exist. He suffered a large amount of abuse at the hands of his alcoholic mother who would become violently drunk almost daily. He spent most of his time in the back with his father, silently learning the trade that would mean his ticket to the recognition he had always wanted. He eventually earned the title of Master Brewer upon his father's retirement and Beer's refusal of the job. Scotch met his future wife (at the time Merlot Vino) at the age of fifteen when they worked on a school project together. He had avoided her for most of school because her rough behavior and sharp tongue reminded him too much of his mother. But after she warmed up to him, he couldn't help but love the girl who recognized and adored him for who he was. | m e r l o t v o c a t u s f e m a l e | 4 0 o p e n Coordinator extraordinaire, Merlot Vocatus is in charge of keeping proper stock of ingredients, scheduling shipments and keeping her perfectionist husband, Scotch, from taking too damn long on finishing a product. For all her husband's softness, Merlot is a sharp contrast to that patient man. While those closest to her can see the fierce love and passion that dominates her every action, she often comes across as harsh and unemotional. She's refined, well-mannered and exceedingly formal. She absolutely adores her husband, who is the only person who can get her to lighten up, even without drinks. Growing up, Merlot never had much. Born the love child of a hard-headed metal worker and a cotton-headed factory maid, she was almost always hungry. Her mother was never the strong-handed parent her seven siblings needed, so Merlot was acting sister and mother. Her father felt that formality and good manners were two of the most useful skills-- besides respect of others and yourself-- that any successful being could have and she learned them well. She had always been aware of the bruised brew-boy in the back of the classroom. He was quiet, but certainly handsome. Merlot nursed a crush on Scotch for several years before a class project together allowed her the chance to get him to open up. They were married as soon as she turned 19. He was her ticket to a better life, and no one was happier on her wedding day. |
t e q u i l a v o c a t u s f e m a l e | 2 0 o p e n Manager-in-training of the Tottering Tankard's tasting room, Tequila is the eldest daughter of Scotch and Merlot Vocatus. She dreams of someday taking over from her father as the Master Brewer. The only thing in her way? Being able to show up to work completely sober. Tequila has a smile for every person and is an incredible hostess, making her best suited for a job in the tasting room and bar. She has a gift for making even the most prickly person comfortable. She loves a good party and enjoy losing herself in the energy of the people around her. Behind her million-watt grin hides a darkness that she can't seem to explain or account for. Her depression unsettles her mostly on the basis that it has no visible cause. Tequila took to drink to self-medicate shortly after her fifteenth birthday and rarely faces the day without her silver hip flask in hand. Sometimes Tequila wonders if she could've been a better role model for her younger siblings. They certainly haven't turned out badly, but she wonders if they struggle with the same things she does. She wonders if she could help them. But she has never spoken about the depression lurking in her heart, or the knife-scars on the insides of her thighs. + + + *Note* Those applying for Tequila must be able to respectfully and realistically portray clinical depression. If you've never experienced or observed depression first hand, please do research before deciding to apply for her. | e v e r c l e a r v o c a t u s m a l e | 1 8 Death x Reluctant brewer-in-training, Everclear is the eldest son of Scotch and Merlot Vocatus. He may have a deep respect for the careful art and science of brewing and distilling, but numbers crunching and marketing is where his heart truly lies. He's tried to talk to his dad about learning to be a coordinator and book keeper instead-- which did not go well. He'll have to have plenty of tact if he wants to change positions. Although he isn't always the most upfront person, Everclear is quick-witted and a fast learner. He is ambitious and knows what he wants and he isn't going to let anything get in his way. Everclear is a man of action, making his bite a thousand times worse than his bark. He doesn't get along with his brother, Brandy, very well. Let's just say that Everclear has little respect for people who are, to his mind, "All talk with no walk and all body with no brains." |
b r a n d y v o c a t u s m a l e | 1 7 Arrows x Bartender for the Tottering Tankard, Brandy is the third child of Scotch and Merlot Vocatus. He finds the nitty-gritty brew work abysmally boring and prefers his work amongst the customers-- which is mostly just flirting with the pretty girls who visit. Nothing makes Brandy happier than interacting with people. He innately understands body language and is an excellent judge of character. His family calls him a walking lie detector. He has very little interest in things that require a lot of thought and has the attention span of an energetic puppy. He can use his brain. He just prefer to use it for banter. Brandy has always been... promiscuous. He began interacting with girls on a sexual level at a young age. He is adept at getting into beds and then not being required to stay with their owners. He moves between girls rather quickly, but-- besides the occasional stalker-- most seem fine with his love 'em and leave 'em attitude. One of his favorite people in the world is his step-cousin, Shirley Temple. He has exceedingly protective of her and her innocence and tries to keep the world from shattering her rose-colored glasses. He is worried about her developing feelings for him, but wonders if, maybe, they aren't such a bad thing. | b a i l e y v o c a t u s m a l e | 1 6 ghosty x A quiet brewing and distilling apprentice, Bailey is the youngest of Scotch and Merlot Vocatus' children. He is an extremely hard worker and doesn't talk much. Instead, he throws his all into becoming the best brewer he can be. Even though he's the youngest, he is willing to work the hardest to become the Master Brewer, but he doesn't tell anyone-- especially Tequila-- that. Bailey is the peacemaker of the family, even if he is the youngest. He doesn't like to make waves and prefers to be unseen and unheard. As he lacks the drive of his older siblings, he is willing to do whatever is asked of him. He would rather tell everyone yes. He has a heart that easily melts and a very sensitive nature he's learned to tuck away out of sight from the cruelty of the world. More recently, Bailey has begun to struggle with his sexuality. He has never been interested in any girls and had never thought twice about it, assuming the right girl hadn't come along yet. But as he's aged and matured, he's begun to see his childhood friend, Moonshine Ruah in a new light. Although Moonshine would be open to his advances, Bailey worries about what his parents would think and so he says nothing. |
m o o n s h i n e r u a h m a l e | 1 7 o p e n A bartender with an occasional appearance in the tasting room, Moonshine Ruah is well-known and well-loved for his high energy, loud laugh and loving personality. However, he's infamous for his short attention span and scatter-brain thought patterns. He leads the country dance lessons with his twin sister, Absinthe. Loud-mouthed and flamboyant, if Moonshine is in the room, you can't help but notice him. He chatters away so quickly and never takes anything too seriously. He's always joking around, especially about how forgetful he always is. He's super cuddly and is the most hilarious touchy-feely drunk you ever saw. Practically raised by "Aunt" (as they call her) Merlot, Moonshine and his sister Absinthe are almost like cousins to the Vocatus children. Their mother is known to the entire Vocatus clan as "Aunt Cider" and they regularly take part in family events. His father died when he was only a year old in an industrial accident, leaving his mother a widow and Moonshine to grow up without a father. With the help of the Vocatus family, he has turned out just fine. Moonshine has been very openly pansexual since he was fourteen. | a b s i n t h e r u a h f e m a l e | 1 7 m y l e e x An apprentice Brewer, Absinthe Ruah is as serious and level-headed as her twin brother is fun-loving and scatter-brained. She's been learning the art of brewing and distilling for three years now and, although she's not blood related, has her eye on becoming the Head Brewer in the near future. Now to get on "Uncle" Scotch's good side. For extra cash, she helps her twin brother, Moonshine, teach dance lessons at the bar. Nothing makes Absinthe happier than material wealth. She's not into brewing for the fun of it. She wants to get rich. From a young age, her earliest memories were spending the afternoons and nights with "Aunt" (as they call her) Merlot and then having to go home in the mornings to the dilapidated shack her mother owned. As soon as she was old enough to understand the concept of working to earn money, she's worked her butt off for everything she owns herself. Her motto is "a little hard work never hurt anyone." She doesn't quite understand her brother and his "do whatever feels right" attitude towards life, nor does she respect her mother's blind trust in the world. She looks at the world as a dog-eat-dog place and she wants to be the person catching the dogs. She has designs on marrying Everclear so that she can be the Head Brewer and he can be the owner. |
c i d e r r u a h f e m a l e | 5 2 o p e n Manager of the Tottering Tankard's tasting room, Cider Ruah has been working for the Vocatus family since she was fifteen years old, giving her enough senority to get her two children jobs for the brewery and bar. Although she does a lot for the business, she isn't appreciated as much as she should be. She doesn't realize this, though, and doesn't demand the recognition she deserves. Cider is one of the sweetest and most generous women in District 9. She doesn't have much, and yet she'd give the shirt off her back or the last of her food to anyone who asks. Her selfless attitude has opened her up to be taken advantage of. She was never a "strong and sexy" woman-- more like the soft and comforting type-- so men didn't realize what they were missing out on when they would pass her over in favor of other women. Finally, at the age of 32, she married her husband and, a year later, conceived twins. At 35, a year after Moonshine and Absinthe were born, her husband was killed in an industrial accident and she found herself supporting two young children alone. Her small family would probably never have survived to this day without the Vocatus family. As Merlot was already looking after two children of her own (and expecting another), she agreed to watch the siblings while Cider worked long shifts to make ends meet. You can never say Cider doesn't work hard enough-- it was from her that Absinthe inherited her tenacious work ethic. | b e e r v o c a t u s m a l e | 4 6 o p e n Owner and general manager of the Tottering Tankard, Beer is the head of the Vocatus family, even if he doesn't do any of the work. Beer's job is to manage the money and the accounts and make sure everyone gets paid for their work equally. Nobody is quite sure how honest he's being though, since nobody has been allowed to look at the books since he took over. Beer was always the perfect son who could do no wrong. As such, he never learned how to actually do anything. He largely rode on his younger brother's coat tails and would claim work as his own. He always loves a good joke and often tells his own homemade ones that're extra cheesy. He is fond of telling tall tales, which he always claims are true. He's slicker than a bald weasel dipped in Crisco and can worm his way out of anything. He absolutely adores his step-daughter, Shirley Temple. Although she's only been his step-daughter for four years, they're still super close. He finds himself wondering if his shady business practices and immoral actions will affect her negatively. He loves his wife L'eau very, very dearly and is blind to all of her many flaws. Embezzlement is a common occurrence with Beer. One of his greatest fears is that his sister-in-law, Merlot, or his nephew, Everclear, will ever get ahold of the books and find out how much they're really profiting. He could care less about what the rest of his family would think. It's how he imagines his little girl would look at him after she finds out that keeps him worried. |
s h i r l e y t e m p l e f e m a l e | 1 5 o p e n Shirley has never tasted a drop of alcohol and her mother has banned her from ever stepping foot in the Tottering Tankard outside of Ratmas or the Feast of Fall. Shirley, of course, comes anyways. Rather than going and studying like she says, she sneaks off to the bar almost every night of the week to hang out with her step-cousins while they're working. She loves the dancing and is learning to play poker. Growing up being forced to wear rose-colored glasses has never been fun for Shirley. She knows that the world holds so much more and she hates being held back from anything. She's strong willed and very stubborn, but ultimately follows rules. She is super attached to her step-dad, as her mother controls her way too much for her liking. Shirley wants to be free more than anything and hopes to start working for the Tottering Tankard when she turns sixteen. Brandy is the person she looks up to the most. Although she's only known him for four years since her mother got remarried, she thinks he's the best person in the world and, like her step-father, is blind to his flaws. He is her closest friend in the world. | l ' e a u v o c a t u s f e m a l e | 3 4 o p e n Wife of Beer, the owner of the Tottering Tankard, L'eau (pronounced like "Low") hates the brewery and merely sees it as a way to make money. She sees herself as above it all and wishes she had never lowered herself to this life for the sake of money. She separates herself from the rest of the family, telling her daughter that they're all "coarse drunks." L'eau, for all her arrogance and pettiness, loves her daughter dearly and this is the only reason she has stayed with Beer for as long as she has. Their attachment makes her more than a little jealous, but she's just pleased her daughter is happy. She worries that her daughter will become wild and make the same mistakes she did. Shirley's father (L'eau's first husband) was a kind, loving man who enjoyed L'eau until he realized how controlling she was and divorced her. It was messy and, as Shirley was still so young, L'eau tried to make another relationship work. One new marriage turned into another and now, with Beer as her fifth husband, she's miserable, but bearing it for the sake of her daughter. |

Because this is a brewery/bar, this plot allows for a lot of flexibility in where we can go with it. I have a few ideas in mind and would love to hear yours as well. Much of the inner workings of the plot will deal with the interplay of the characters as they strive for their goals.
Requirements are few. While some characters I will prefer to be played by more experienced writers, I will consider any and everyone interested. However, this is not first-come, first-serve. It's more like "best fit gets it."
