Flynn pulled Alyx aside, away from the others. He really didn't want all of them to hear this and start gossiping. His son, Ryan, was worrying him; he seemed so weak and vulnerable, and Flynn wished he hadn't left him to be raised by a woman without a man's influence in his life. If he'd stuck around rather than abandoning the woman as soon as he heard she was with child, the boy might have been more like Flynn himself. Strong, heartless, ruthless; any sign of weakness crushed from sight as fast as possible. Ryan was already unraveling some of those qualities in Flynn like some horrible wasting disease. Flynn couldn't allow it to spread. He had to stamp on it right away. But the thought of Ryan being reaped in the upcoming games gave Flynn the most horrible dizzying feelings, which were so alien and uncomfortable to him.
He pinned Alyx's shoulder with his large hand, holding the boy so that he had no choice but face him. It was the closest he'd really come to an affectionate gesture, because he hated affection and touching people generally. He really needed the boy to concentrate and heed every word he said though.
"Alyx, how are you feeling about your preparations for the Games? Feeling ready to take on the challenge?" Personally he thought the boy was very good but could do with a couple more years of training to be his best. Entering the Games at 18 was a very different prospect from 15. He MIGHT be out of time though, and he wanted to know the boy's own thoughts on the matter.
