It was the hushed sound of voices carrying through the trees and the crunching of snow beneath boots that woke her. The night had been long and tougher than the first. Mona had been restless, tossing and turning constantly, trying desperately for what felt like all night to get comfortable whilst her hand throbbed in pain. But when sleep had finally came, it had felt like she blinked and morning arrived.
Only this time they weren't alone.
She rose quickly, sure to grab her sword and knife before she followed the girls toward the top of the hill opposite where they'd made camp. In the distance she saw familiar faces, ones of those they'd fought in the bloodbath, but she remembered the anthem last night at dusk. She remembered the face of the boy from ten and the sadness that filled her chest at the relief she felt. At least she wouldn't have to kill him herself.
"What's going on?" She nudged Vervain lightly in the shoulder once she finally met her stride. Mona looked up at the small crowd, eyed the sleds and the unfamiliar steep incline of this hill—which she didn't remember from yesterday—and it all finally clicked. She squinted as she attempted to read the sign in the distance. No violence, or else. There would be no fighting today, no death.
Instead, there would be a race.
Bending at the knees, Mona lowered herself to eye level with Shadow and scratched behind her ears. "Meet me at the bottom, okay?" There was no answer of course, all Shadow did was tilt her head to the side and lick the inside of Mona's hand before padding off toward Vervain's own wolf, Ghost. "Okay then, ladies. Let's win, yeah?" She smiled back at Charlie and Iris, gave a wink to Vervain, then sat down atop her twinkle light clad sled and pushed off down the hill
