I dreamed of what heat felt like last night. Most particularly, flames from when I boiled water for both me and Sorrel. It was such a welcomed feeling, getting the sensations back in my limbs and in my fingertips. My nose felt warm with all of the heated embers of the firewood and as Sorrel collected hers, I was the first to offer mine. It was the only salvation we'd had in three days. The only thing that we had to look forward to and the last thing we wanted when the last piece of fire slowly melted into nothing and sizzled out with a thin wisp of smoke.
The smell that lingered reminded me of home. So much like it, that I collected my snow globe just so I could peer into it once more before another day passed and I could no longer look at where I came from. Only, I noticed now how the water was frozen, the fake sparkles hanging in mid air and frozen in time just like we will be soon, I'm afraid. My heart yearned to get Sorrel home but I also wanted to talk to Josiah once more. "Hey Sor..." I whispered to her while she slept in front of me. She looked so comfortable sleeping with Masau and how she looked to be warm against his fur.
Tux raised his head and gave a great yawn with a hint of a groan in it before he stared at me for a moment. "Yeah, boy. Don't worry. You will be taken care of, I'm sure of it. Sorrel will take care of you." It was almost like I was telling him the future and it donned on me that Sorrel will never realize what it's like for me to want to keep her alive. Even though she fought me back, I didn't catch that the other day that maybe, she was different from everyone else.
I shake her gently as the light began to penetrate the sky and the snow went from a silver glisten to a white sparkle. "We need to get going. We've got another full day ahead of us. We need to keep moving or we'll freeze. Got the firewood?" I asked her, knowing that we just might have to burn to stay alive and that's when I noticed something right before we left. My foot stepped on something uneven in the snow and figuring it to be part of the frozen logs, it was actually a bottle of something more useful than that. I watched Sorrel go ahead of me and I quickly pocketed the cherished tool into my jacket.
What would I even do with it? I internally monologued a whole scenario about using it or not to use it and the sound of Sorrel's footsteps crunching in the snow not far in front of me began to silence themselves until a figure drew my attention. It started with one, then as it seemed like another bad repeat of the previous day, I hissed and stepped in front of Sorrel. I reached for my weapon and held it out. "You here to sled or fight?"
It felt empty, the words that flew from my mouth. This was the first set of people we had encountered since the start and this would turn out nothing like the mutt fight. Instead of genetically engineered creatures that wanted our heads because of how they were created, the two people that stood in front of me, one I recognized as the district ten girl, was our newest fight. What I didn't realize that two more were not far off and before I could cognitively react with a calculated mind, I was already accepting my fate. Sorrel and I were outnumbered. I turned to her. "Watch my back, would you? Stay close to me and I've got yours."
